The Best Tulum Hotels I’ve Seen, After Visiting 40+

Updated June 25, 2024

👉 Summary of My Picks:

Here’s the thing about Tulum: your hotel or resort will be the center of your entire vacation, so it’s crucial to get it right. But, honestly, many of hotels in Tulum — even “luxury resorts” — are frankly mediocre in terms of amenities. They get away with it because, well, Tulum is just so popular that they’ll sell out anyway.

But I am here to help you find the real gems! My partner Clara and I are Tulum lovers who have personally visited, photographed, and ranked dozens of the most popular hotels in Tulum. Our goal is to bring you the most authentic, honest, and unbiased recommendations on the web – with real candid photos!

Nerea Tulum (New Beach Luxury Hotel)

Booking.com

Check prices, reviews & availability for Nerea Tulum 👇

Nerea is a newer boutique resort located in the exclusive Tankah bay, a sheltered beachfront community with a guarded gate 10 minutes north of the Tulum ruins. If you want a secure, private, luxurious, and peaceful escape from the crowds, Tankah is the best area to stay in Tulum.

Clara and I visited for the hotel’s soft opening. We loved the stylish rooms, the delicious onsite restaurant, the kayaks and snorkel gear, the hammocks and massage station on the hotel’s private dock, and the comfortable beach loungers with bar service. The highlight of our stay at Nerea was the incredible multi-sectioned geometric pool (check out my drone photos above to see what I mean). This hotel is just so photogenic!

If you want (and can afford) the best luxury boutique in Tulum, we’d say just book at Nerea Tulum now and get on with planning your trip. If that’s not the right fit for you, we’ve still got 19 more top hotels in Tulum to show off ….

Cabañas Tulum Hotel (Boutique Hotel, South Beach)

Booking.com

Check prices, reviews & availability for Cabañas Tulum Hotel 👇

I think Cabañas has the single best beach area among Tulum’s hotels. The beach is just bigger in front of this hotel compared to others, and the sand is super soft.

The Cabañas Tulum hotel is just exceptionally well cared for and maintained. The rooms are truly beautiful. If you can, book one of the beachfront units that come with private dipping pools or jacuzzis. They are just spectacular!

Cabañas has the perfect location, pretty much right in the middle of the main beach area. But the property maintains a relaxed atmosphere, with no loud music or parties. If you want to be in the middle of the action while still having your own private oasis to retreat to, this is the place.

Overall, I think Cabañas is the single best all-around hotel in Tulum’s main beach zone.

La Zebra (Luxury Family Hotel, South Beach)

Booking.com

Check prices, reviews & availability for La Zebra 👇

I can confidently say that La Zebra is the single best family-oriented hotel in Tulum. La Zebra is a stunning beachside property with a staff that really “gets” what families are looking for. It offers multiple play spaces for children of all ages, plus special activities and events like movie night.

All the 30 rooms at La Zebra have a king sized bed plus two pull out twin beds. If you can, snag one with the private plunge pools. If they are booked up, you can still enjoy La Zebra’s excellent rooftop swimming pool!

The La Zebra restaurant is led by chef Eleazar Bonilla, and serves Mexican fare in a beautiful open-air seating area. For a special treat, reserve the “Chef’s table” area in advance for a private chef-hosted dinner.

Another thing I really love about La Zebra is the beach club area. There are loads of comfortable seating areas and loungers, and the staff works hard to keep the beach clean of sargassum. And as a special unique selling point, the beach features several marked and protected turtle nests.

Layla Tulum (Design Boutique, Tulum Town)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Layla Tulum 👇

Layla Tulum is one of the most Instagrammable hotels in Tulum. Layla is conveniently located in the center of Tulum town. The star is the stunning rooftop pool. I mean, it is just made for social media, with its soaring Moroccan-inspired facade and colorful tile. If you want a hotel stay that will leave you with loads of fantastic photos, Laya is definitely the place in Tulum for you.

Layla’s rooms also maintain the Moroccan theme, and are some of the most stylish and well kept I’ve seen in Tulum. For a special treat, check out the rooms with the beds suspended with rope from the ceiling.

Encantada Tulum (Boutique Hotel, South Beach)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Encantada 👇

With only 8 rooms set directly on the beach, Encantada affords guests exceptional privacy and intimacy. Encantada is one of Tulum’s most exclusive luxury hotels for couples. For an exceptional romantic getaway, consider the top suites with private balconies overlooking the ocean.

The overall design of this boutique hotel in Tulum gives off that tropical or island vibe. Encantada’s beachside dining area gives a breathtaking view of Tulum beach. The hotel of course has loungers and beachside service.

What I most liked in my recent visit was that the hotel does an exceptional job of cleaning the beach. Note that Encantada guests can also access the facilities at its sister properties Radhoo and NEST, including the pool at the Radhoo across the street.

👉 Beach or Town? Deciding where to stay in Tulum comes down to choosing between the beach and the town. It’s really a question of budget, because Tulum’s luxury beach hotels worth it if you can swing the extra cost per night!

Dune Boutique Hotel (Beach)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Dune Boutique Hotel 👇

If you want to be right in the beach party zone, then stay at the Dune Boutique Hotel, located right on beach road. The star attraction at Dune is the incredible pool, which offers several hanging nest seats that are perfect for snapping that iconic Tulum photo.

But it’s not just the style that makes Dune one of the best boutique hotels in Tulum. The spacious rooms, the friendly service, and the included breakfast all make this one of the most highly rated hotels in Tulum.

Clara recently visited and especially liked the pool and the huge guest rooms. Her insider tip is to book one of the guest rooms with a private beachfront plunge pool and terrace. Just heaven!

Mereva Tulum (Private Beach Hotel)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Mereva Tulum 👇

Tulum can get pretty busy, so for families looking for a serene escape, the private beach resort at Mereva by Blue Sky Tulum is a great bet for a serene and quiet Caribbean vacation.

Mereva is located in Tankah bay, a private and exclusive beach area north of the public main hotel zone. This luxury hotel is targeted to families and groups (couples or solo travelers may prefer its nearby sister boutiques, Alea and Nerea).

Most of the rooms have a view of the ocean, and the master suites have private plunge pools. You’ll be spoiled for choices to swim because Mereva also offers two stunning pools, a private dock over the Caribbean, and a nearby cenote.

Get a massage on the dock, borrow snorkeling equipment from the hotel, or join one of the boat tours organized by Mereva. Hungry? Enjoy the delicious organic firewood creations of executive chef Carlos Peregrina Serralde. Yum!

Villa Pescadores (Boutique Hotel, North Beach)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Villa Pescadores 👇

Are you looking for the kind of vacation where you just chill and unwind on the beach? Then I think you’ll love Villa Pescadores. This is one of the more relaxed and friendly beach hotels in Tulum that I’ve visited. Villa Pescadores is simply not pretentious or stuffy. There’s more of a focus on having a chill vacation than on looking good for Instagram.

Villa Pescadores offers 22 guest rooms. Some of them are rustic beach cabanas where you can step from the entrance onto some of the softest white sand in Tulum, or chill on your terrace while listening to ocean waves and jungle birds. Another 8 guest rooms are more recently renovated (I really like the hammocks on the second floor balcony!).

The hotel has a restaurant, a super clean pool, and a popular beach club. The staff offer exceptional personalized service (I really got the sense they get to know every guest). Oh, and it’s located walking distance to the Tulum ruins too.

Mezzanine (Luxury Hotel, North Beach)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Mezzanine 👇

Mezzanine is consistently among the highest rated Tulum beach hotels, and it’s home to one of its best restaurants too. It’s the place to stay if you enjoy personalized hospitality in a luxurious setting. It has an exclusive location in the north beach area within Tulum National Park and sports 9 exquisite rooms perched on a quiet cliff overlooking a 1.5 kilometer stretch of beach that goes all the way to the Tulum ruins.

There’s a small but beautiful pool running through the property, and the suites have heated private plunge pools on their private terraces. Guests love the luxurious touches like the bottle of mezcal in every room upon arrival, the chemex coffee makers, the guest only lounge and hammock area, and the oceanside massage area.

Perhaps the best feature of Mezzanine, however, is the onsite Thai restaurant of the same name. It was some of the best Thai food I’ve had outside of Thailand! Oh,  and the views over the ocean from the outdoor dining area are truly fantastic.

Hotel Biwa Tulum (Boutique, Tulum Town)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Hotel Biwa Tulum 👇

I was really impressed when I toured the Hotel Biwa Tulum. I visit a lot of hotels and I have developed a keen sense for when the management just “gets it.” For example, Biwa pays close attention to things like making sure the showers and entrances are all handicap accessible.

The pool at Biwa is super clean and inviting. The rooms were spotlessly clean. Several rooms included mini kitchenettes, and the suites are more like huge 2 bedroom apartments.

There is a stylish cafe where you can eat breakfast, an attached tour agency, bike rentals, laundry facilities, and a small gym. They even have a couple secret VIP rooms reserved as special treats for newlyweds.

Hats off the management! Overall, it’s a great 3 star hotel for couples, groups, or mobility challenged and elderly guests. Note one drawback is that Biwa does face a road, but I found the noise pretty manageable.

Aloft Tulum (Mid-Range Hotel, Tulum Town)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Aloft Tulum 👇

If you’re a Marriott Bonvoy elite or just generally prefer to stay with brands you know, Tulum now has a pretty decent Aloft property. I recently spent three nights in a corner suite of the Aloft Tulum, and I quite enjoyed it. My room had a living area and a large patio with a hammock. All the rooms come equipped with these very cool retro Marshall speakers, which I quite enjoyed.

The Aloft has a fantastic rooftop pool with views of the jungle stretching all the way to the sealine in the distance. The Aloft has another pool downstairs, a large gym, a conference and events space, a breakfast area, and a bar and pool table area.

I did not like the $15 fee for parking and I especially found the resort fee annoying, though at least it comes with a food and beverage credit. Overall, I think there are better boutique hotels in Tulum to consider, but for Marriott loyalists the Aloft is the place to stay.

Casa Altamar (Boutique, Tankah Bay)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Casa Altamar 👇

Casa Altamar in Tankah Bay is perfect for families, couples, or anyone who wants the safety and privacy of this exclusive guarded community north of Tulum. Though you’ll need a car or taxi to get to Tulum town, you may not want to really leave. The highly rated restaurant served all three meals (and even has weekly chef-led cooking classes). Plus, the property is loaded with amenities like kayaks, snorkeling equipment, comfortable loungers, and massage stations.

Casa Altamar has a private dock that extends over the bay. What’s so great about Tankah Bay is that it’s super shallow, almost “pool like,” with a reef that is just perfect for snorkeling. Oh, if you want a real pool, Casa Altamar is fantastic too. You’ll also find plenty of beach loungers and a spectacular rooftop terrace perfect for grabbing a sunset drink.

Casa Teka (Boutique Hotel, South Beach)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Casa Teka 👇

Casa Teka is definitely the place to stay if you’re traveling with a group of friends and want to be walking distance to the action on Tulum beach party zone. It’s very popular with bachelor and bachelorette parties and other events.

Casa Teka’s massive rooms are perfectly designed for sharing. Most have multiple beds or pull out couches, and the suites even have a lofted additional sleeping area (meaning they can sleep up to 6 people total).

The vibe at Casa Teka is very jungle-chic. You’ll find seating areas with beautiful sunset views over the jungle canopy. And there’s even a private cenote behind the property, which is a great place to relax and connect with nature.

Note that Casa Teka does not have its own beachfront, but that guests have access to the beach through the nearby Bagatelle Tulum restaurant and beach club.

Mi Amor a Colibri Boutique Hotel (Adults Only, North Beach)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Mi Amor a Colibri Boutique Hotel 👇

Mi Amor is one of the best adults-only hotels in Tulum, and certainly the most stylish luxury hotels in Tulum.

The first thing you notice when you enter Mi Amor is the unique design concept, which has a sort of “retro tropical” feel to it. The star attraction is the stunning pool and “Mexican Mediterranean” restaurant where – wait for it – you can dine at a table in the pool!

The one downside of this hotel is the lack of a beachfront. Instead, Mi Amor offers these exclusive cliffside seating areas and gorgeous cabanas overlooking the ocean. They are super private and spread apart. You can order drinks or food service via WhatsApp. For couples looking to spend quality time together, it’s just perfect!

One last tip: if you can, try to snag one of the beachfront rooms with a private pool. They’re just incredible.

Hotelito Azul (Boutique Hotel, Beach)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Hotelito Azul 👇

Hotelito Azul is a newer 5-star bohemian beach boutique, and is one of Clara’s personal favorite hotels.

Hotelito Azul offers a prime location on the beach with super spacious suites and villas. Many offer private beachfront balconies with hammocks and hanging chairs. You’ll find a spectacular pool and bar on the rooftop, plus a fashionable coffee shop and market in the front. Try the smoothies!

Oh, and Hotelito Azul also features some of the fastest internet we’ve ever seen in Tulum (often a problem in other hotels in Tulum). Overall, Hotelito Azul does a truly fantastic job of packing everything you’d possibly need for a relaxing beach vacation in Tulum. You could honestly have an excellent trip without ever leaving the hotel grounds!

Eterna Tulum (Adults Only, La Veleta)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Eterna Tulum 👇

Eterna is the most beautiful hotel I’ve found in La Veleta, a newer development at the far end of Tulum pueblo. If you’re looking for comfort on a modest budget, Eterna a great choice. Eterna is adults only, so it’s perfect for couples or anyone looking for a blissful retreat.

The guest rooms were some of the cleanest I’ve seen in Tulum. Several offer nice kitchens. The upstairs suites in particular are spectacular – they span three enormous split levels, with a kitchen, living area, bedroom, and upstairs terrace (private pool).

You’ll find two shared rooftop pools as well as a larger one downstairs. Note many roads in La Veleta still aren’t finished, and the area in general is a work in progress. I would definitely recommend renting a car if you stay in La Veleta.

Valhalla Residences by Biwa (Apartment Style, North Tulum Town)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Valhalla Residences by Biwa 👇

The Valhalla Residences are spotlessly clean apartment-style hotel rooms that are perfect for longer stays, families, workcations, or digital nomads. The units are located in a newer super-safe gated development north of Tulum main town, so a rental car is recommended.

The best part of Valhalla Residences is the property’s fantastic pool, which has these fancy spa-style jets.

I saw several units, and they were all very large, with kitchens and various seating areas. If you can, try to book the enormous rooftop penthouse which has an outdoor kitchen and couch and a jacuzzi where you can watch the sunset. Just be sure to keep an eye out for the toucans!

Naala Tulum (Boutique Hotel, Town)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Naala Tulum 👇

Several readers suggested we add Naala Tulum to our list, so Clara and I recently booked a night to check it out. What we most liked about Naala is the location, price point to value ratio, and gorgeous rooftop pools. Naala is walkable to the restaurants in town, but right at the start of the access road to the beach.

The guest rooms and grounds offer that quintessential “Tulum aesthetic,” and are clean and well cared for. Ours even had several “smart home” features like an Alexa assistant. We also had a nice terrace overlooking the peaceful garden in the hotel’s courtyard.

The hotel seemed geared toward groups of friends, couples, and younger travelers. It is a good choice if you’re looking to enjoy Tulum’s nightlife while still having a peaceful retreat to go back to.

Alea Tulum by Blue Sky (Luxury Boutique, Beach)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Alea Tulum 👇

If you manage to snag one of the ocean-view suites at Alea Tulum by Blue Sky, you’ll fall asleep to the sounds of waves cresting against the sand of Alea’s private beach. Alea is the sister hotel of Mereva Tulum, and is also located a bit north of the main hotel zone in a more secluded area away from the masses.

Alea draws some of the most gushing reviews from guests. Reviewers love the clean and spacious suites, the friendly staff, and the gorgeous beach.

The location in Tankah Bay helps to shelter it a bit from the sargasso that plagues so much of Tulum, so this is the perfect Tulum beach hotel if you’re just looking to relax and soak in some rays on that famous Tulum sand.

La Valise Tulum (Luxury Hotel, South Beach)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for La Valise 👇

La Valise is by far the most exclusive of the four beach hotels run by Namron Hospitality Group. Guests at La Valise’s 11 expansive jungle-themed suites have access to its sister properties NEST, Radhoo, and Encantada, but the reverse isn’t true.

Overall, La Valise is a fantastic hotel for couples, wedding parties, and honeymooners.

I loved the simple yet sophisticated aesthetics, with Mexican art and culture integrated into the overall design. You can lounge around the expansive open-air living room or get an onsite massage while enjoying beautiful ocean views. The salt water infinity pool is pristine, and the rooms very large and comfortable. I especially thought the bathtubs were spectacular!

For a special treat, book the master suit. It has a massive palapa roof and a king size bed that rolls onto the beachfront terrace, where you can sleep under the stars!

Many of the 26 luxury suites offer direct views of the beach, some with patios or terraces just steps away from the shore. The long pool is very solid, and the friendly staff will bring you poolside service. There is also a well-done restaurant right on the beach. Plus, if you aren’t staying in Coco Limited, it’s still worth stopping by for a day and enjoying their excellent beach club.

Kin Ha Tulum (Budget, Tulum Town)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Kin Ha Tulum 👇

For travelers on a budget, Kin Ha Tulum is a fantastic affordable hotel in Tulum.

Kin Ha Tulum is located in the center of town, walking distance to all the restaurants, shops, and bars. But the rooms are set back from the street so are relatively quiet. I particularly like that the guest rooms are some of the cleanest I’ve seen. They were absolutely spotless.

While there isn’t a pool, Kin Ha Tulum does have a large sun deck and a rooftop dining area where you can enjoy the included breakfast or simply relax. The hotel seems to be especially popular with couples and solo travelers on a budget, and I would rate it as one of the best in the budget hotel class.

If all you want is a clean, central, safe, and friendly accommodation, then Kin Ha may be the right hotel for you!

NEST is a small romantic beach hotel located at the very far southern end of Tulum beach. NEST only has 12 guest rooms and a private villa in an intimate jungle setting, making it one of the most exclusive beach properties in town. It’s geared towards couples.

NEST is also a popular hotel for weddings in Tulum looking to rent out the entire resort.

The rooms have an aesthetic I would call “minimal Mayan,” and are very bright and sunny. For honeymooners or anyone looking to splash out, the private villa is a truly exceptional place to stay. It has four beds, three bathrooms, a private garden and beach area, and comes with a private butler and chef!

Radhoo Tulum (Boutique Hotel, South Beach)

Radhoo Tulum is a bohemian hotel located on the jungle side of the road in the south beach area. Radhoo has a really large and beautiful pool, with 14 rooms set around it in a tranquil jungle setting.

Several of the upper rooms at Radhoo even have nets on their terrace, where you can lounge in the area as you watch the sunset over the jungle.

On drawback is that Radhoo does not have its own beach area. But to me that’s not really a problem, because guests have access to the beach club at Encantada, which is literally just a dozen steps across the street. If you’re looking for that vintage Tulum jungle vibe, and want to be close to the beach, this may be the hotel for you!

Coco Village (Apartments for Nomads, Town)

Prices, reviews & availability for Coco Village 👇

Coco Village is essentially a hotel for digital nomads in Tulum.

The rooms at Coco Village are apartment-style, with large kitchens, washers and dryers, fast free WiFi, terraces, and all the practical necessities that you might need for a longer stay. It’s really designed to cater to remote workers and digital nomads.

Clara and I stayed at Coco Village recently and, while we did have some trouble checking in when we arrived late at night, ultimately we got it sorted and enjoyed our stay.

I especially appreciated having a washer, as doing laundry in Tulum is a pain. Our apartment was huge, the WiFi was fast, and the price point was reasonable. For a longer stay, it’s a reliable hotel in Tulum for digital nomads.

Sueños Tulum (Eco Resort, Beach)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Sueños Tulum 👇

Concerned about the environmental impact of your visit to Tulum? Consider that a VICE documentary recently exposed that many Tulum hotels dump their wastewater right into the Tulum aquifer. To minimize your ecological impact, stay at one of Sueños Tulum’s 13 beachfront suites. This hotel runs its own wastewater treatment, powers via solar energy, and collects rainwater to maximize sustainability.

Sueños is a smaller beach hotel, and there’s no beach club or public restaurant, so it’s a good choice if you’re looking for a private experience but don’t want to give up a prime location. The rooms feature nice balconies and comfortable hammocks.

The rooms are decorated with authentic Mayan art, the wall are beautifully hand-painted rooms. You’ll also feel at one with nature because of the surrounding trees and green scenery.

As an eco resort, power is available 24/7 generated by solar panels. Note that air conditioning is limited to the night, with A/C only running from 8 PM to 8 AM. The rooms have fans, hammocks, and are well cross-ventilated by the ocean breeze!

It’s one of the fanciest hotels in Tulum, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a more luxurious hotel in Tulum. Casa Malca was purchased a few years ago by a New York based art dealer, who built it up from the original 8 room setup to its current 72 spacious and art-conscious rooms.

Ahau Tulum (Luxury Beach Eco Resort)

Prices, reviews & availability for Ahau Tulum 👇

Ahau Tulum is another one hotel to consider in the environmentally friendly category.

Ahau Tulum is an upscale property, is widely known as one of the most exclusive Tulum resorts, and has even become famous on Instagram thanks to artist Daniel Popper’s installation, entitled Ven a la Luz, which previously guarded the entrance to Ahau and has now been reworked on the beach. Ahau Tulum itself runs off self-generated solar and wind power, and a rain catch system.

The suites at Ahau Tulum are spacious and evocative of the Tulum boho-chic style. Many offer ocean views. Ahau’s location in the middle of “Zona Hotelera Tulum” (the hotel zone) also perfectly places you within walking distance of some of Tulum’s best restaurants, bars, and beaches. Overall, for the eco-conscious luxury traveler who doesn’t mind a higher price per night, Ahau is definitely one of the most Instagrammable hotels in Tulum!

Arthouse (Aparthotel, Aldea Zama)

Booking.com

Prices, reviews & availability for Arthouse 👇

I spent two weeks in Arthouse recently. Arthouse consists of large apartment-style rentals set around a large and gorgeous outdoor pool. The onsite restaurant, Norita, is one of the best in the Aldea Zama neighborhood of Tulum. And the free wifi is pretty fast.

Overall, Arthouse is a good option for longer stays in Tulum or anyone who is looking for a condo-style hotel.

Just note that Aldea Zama is a part of Tulum that suffers from quite a few power interruptions unfortunately (my stay was interrupted nearly daily by the power cutting out). While not Arthouse’s fault, for now it is a concern with any hotel in the Aldea Zama area that does not have a generator.

Teetotum Hotel (Budget Boutique, Tulum Town)

Prices, reviews & availability for Teetotum Hotel 👇

Teetotum Hotel is probably the best value budget boutique hotel I’ve seen in Tulum. Room rates are super reasonable, but it still offers quite a few fun and well designed common spaces. There’s a rooftop perfect for watching sunsets, a popular bar and restaurant, and even a small dipping pool.

The rooms at Teetotum Hotel are very well designed and pretty spacious for the price point. The friendly staff have also earned this hotel exemplary guest reviews.

If you’re tight on cash and looking for an affordable hotel that is central, clean, and friendly, then check out Teetotum Hotel.

Mayan Monkey (Hostel, Tulum Town)

Prices, reviews & availability for Mayan Monkey 👇

While my hostel days are behind me, if I had to pick one hostel in Tulum to stay at, it would be Mayan Monkey.

Mayan Monkey is located on Coba Avenue, which positions the hostel uniquely between town and the beach. Mayan Monkey’s enormous hostel bar and pool area always has a lively social atmosphere. But, unlike other hostels in Tulum, the rooms are set apart in the back. Mayan Monkey is one of the newer hostels in Tulum, as well, so the facilities are in better condition than the competition.

  • Habitas Tulum – With a rustic-boho chi vibe, Habitas Tulum seems to embrace the spirit of Tulum.
  • Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya – One of the few true “resorts” in Tulum, the Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya is a 5 star hotel located pretty far north of Tulum itself.
  • Hotel Bardo – Located in La Veleta, Hotel Bardo is a luxury hotel with a stylish aesthetic.
  • Ma’xanab Tulum – A newer 5 star hotel located on the beach. The suites look stunning!

    1. I have not stay at the Hilton yet, but I would note the location is very far outside Tulum. It’s almost halfway to Playa del Carmen. But going into Tulum itself requires a pricey 30+ minute taxi ride. It’s an all-inclusive, though, so maybe doesn’t matter as it is marketed for visitors who want to just stay in the resort. If you do stay there and remember, come back here and let us know your opinion of it!

  1. Hi Nate,
How difficult is it to get to the beach from Hotel Bardo? It looks awesome, but sounds like it’s an adventure to get to the beach area.
    Thanks!

    1. For beach access, Hotel Bardo is definitely not the most convenient as it is located in town about a 15-20 drive from the beach. That’s actually better than it used to be now that Avenida Kukulkan is open, but it’s still not ideal. If you have a rental car, that is the best way. If not, you could rent a bike. Biking will take 25-30 minutes, although personally I don’t feel safe biking the full length of Kukulkan as there are winding turns and drivers who whip around them. The only other option is to hire a taxi, which can get expensive fast (taxis were usually $20-30 each way on my last visit).

  2. Hello Nate
What do you think of safety in tulum at the moment. I’m reading a lot of reviews that say it’s gotten really bad? Also wanted to ask if you’ve stayed at Casa Gitano?

    1. You can read our article on safety in Tulum for more. Many people visit safely, but there are issues (not just a recent thing). I have not yet stayed at Casa Gitano, but it looks nice!

    1. Hi Penelope! I know Tulsayab is more like apartments/condos than a hotel, and I can see it has really good reviews on Booking. But I haven’t had the chance to visit yet. If you do stay and remember, we’d love for you to come back here and tell us what your experience was! Overall, I think Tankah Bay is a great area of Tulum to stay if you want a quieter retreat and don’t mind the drive to town.

    1. Check out these VRBO rentals in Tulum. They have lots of inventory for larger apartments and houses that would work for a bachelorette party in Tulum.

We have an article on safety in Tulum you can read for more. The short version is that Tulum is somewhat safe if you take precautions, but there is crime to be aware of. Make sure your group doesn’t leave anything open, and arrange for transportation at night.

  3. Hi Nate,
I’ve been invited to a wedding at the Dream Tulum resort (now owned by Hyatt) Are you familiar with this hotel and the safety of the area?
    Thank you,

    1. Sounds like a fun wedding! Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa is located north of Tankah, in an area that is much further from the main town and should be overall more safe than the town. With that said, you’ll need a rental car (or an expensive taxi) to get around.

  4. You should check our Ma’xanab Tulum. I have been to many on your list and in my opinion it is by far the best facilities and service. Best regards,

  5. Hi Nate – Which, if any, of the higher end hotels have regular shower heads? I am getting so fed up with people trying to market the whole rainhead + handheld combo as a luxury shower when it’s not for a multitude of reasons. And nothing wrecks a day like a sh*** shower. Thank You

  6. Great post; thank you for all of the detailed info. 6 girls and I are going to Tulum in Jan. We are looking for a great place to stay (at least 1 bar, restaurant, and no need to all be in 1 room), that is on the beach, with a pool, and has a lot of action near. Where do you recommend we stay? Thank you for your input in advance.

    1. I have only seen LUV Hotel from the beach (it’s a pretty stretch of beach in southern hotel zone). I can’t speak to what is inside, but LUV does seem to get good reviews!

  7. Hi there!
Thanks for all this helpful information. Do you know of any beachfront resorts/villas in Tulum that offer two bedroom accommodations? I’ll be traveling with my teenage daughter and we’d like to each have our own room if possible. Cheers!

  8. What is this comment all about: “(especially when the beach is covered in seaweed anyway).”, from the description of Coco Hacienda? Sure doesn’t make Tulum that desirable for a beach vacation.

    1. Hey Sean – in case you didn’t know, large amounts of seaweed are very common in Tulum, especially in the late spring and summer months. That’s also true of pretty much all Riviera Maya destinations. It’s unfortunate, but a reality that gets worse each year as the warmer ocean temperature promote sargassum bloom. Many Tulum hotels try to clear it in the mornings, but at times it just becomes too much for even the most well resourced resorts to handle.

    1. Hi Jenny! Azucar is not a Tulum hotel we’ve checked out yet. There are a lot of hotels, and so we try to focus our visits on ones with an 8.5/10 guest rating on Booking (or 4 out of 5 on Google). Azucar doesn’t meet that threshold for our consideration. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad hotel (reviewers can be critical for lots of reasons, and everyone has their own standards), but it definitely does mean there are other hotels in Tulum with higher ratings. If you do stay there, please come back and let us know how your experience was!
