Booking car rentals in advance can help you get a better price. It’s also a good idea to book ahead if you’re visiting Nashville during peak travel times.

Do You Need a Rental Car in Nashville?

It is possible to visit Nashville without a car if you stay mainly downtown and use rideshares or taxis to visit other parts of the city. However, renting a car will give you greater flexibility and allow you to explore less walkable parts of the city. 

It’s easy to pick up your car at the car rental locations at Nashville International Airport upon arrival. Then, you can return it right before you depart.

If you get a hotel in downtown Nashville, you can walk to sites like the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Johnny Cash Museum, and the Ryman Auditorium. So it is possible to visit some of the city’s highlights without a car.

However, you’ll need your own transportation if you want to visit sites outside of downtown like the Grand Ole Opry. For this reason, driving in Nashville is an ideal way to get around.

7 Tips & Mistakes to Avoid When Renting in Nashville

Check Your Insurance

It’s generally a good idea to have more than the minimum state-required insurance for peace of mind and protection if something bad does happen. Adding extra insurance to your rental can increase the price. 

However, you may already have additional coverage due to personal auto insurance, your credit card company, or traveler’s insurance. Know what you’re already covered before adding more.

Make Sure You Park Legally

Nashville has more people and visitors than the city was originally designed to handle. In some areas, parking is limited. 

It might be tempting to park illegally to save time searching for a spot or to avoid paying for parking, but you risk getting a ticket or getting towed. In downtown, one of the easiest places to find paid parking spots is Music City Center.

Check for signs about no parking or paid parking before leaving your car. Sometimes, the signs can take a moment to spot!

See if a Local Location is Cheaper

Sometimes it can be cheaper to get a vehicle from an off airport location than at the airport itself. However, you’ll need to factor in the cost of getting to the location as well as think about the extra time it will take for pick up and drop off. 

There are different locations in Nashville where you can pick up a vehicle besides the Nashville airport.

If you’re staying in a hotel Downtown, you could always explore that area for a day or two before picking up a rental car to visit more of Nashville. This works well if your Nashville hotel offers a shuttle from the airport.

Don’t Leave Valuables in Your Car

Never leave anything valuable in your car. While Nashville is a safe city, for the most part, car break-ins can be an issue. Especially don’t leave anything in your car overnight, but car break-ins can happen even during the day. 

Watch For Bikes and Pedestrians

Nashville’s infrastructure for bikes and pedestrians is less than robust. In some places, bike lanes and sidewalks end abruptly, so people biking or walking sometimes have to go across streets without a crosswalk.
