I’m a Denver local who loves taking day trips to Evergreen. It’s just around 30 minutes from the city, but feels like a far-off mountain escape.

If it’s your first time visiting, I recommend staying in downtown Evergreen — namely, at Alpen Way Chalet Mountain Lodge. This rustic retreat is less than a mile from fantastic bars and restaurants, Evergreen Lake, and hiking trails in Alderfer/Three Sisters Park.

But depending on your plans, other parts of Evergreen may be better suited. Keep scrolling for insights into the pros and cons of each area, and see a brief summary of my overall favorite hotels.

I think of Evergreen as having two regions. There’s the historic downtown area on Highway 74, which has lots of shops, restaurants, and things to do. It’s within walking distance of Evergreen Lake, and if you plan to visit to escape city life, this is where you’ll want to spend your time. You’ll find adorable cabins like the Colorado Bear Creek Cabins and cute inns in this area.

There’s also what I consider the business district, off of I-70 at the Evergreen Parkway exit. This is where you’ll find a Walmart and several other grocery stores. You’ll also find restaurant chains, like Starbucks and McDonald’s, along with the only chain hotel in Evergreen, the Comfort Suites Golden West

Downtown Evergreen stretches alongside Bear Creek, and there are several places to eat and shop. You’ll find a brewery at one end of town, and there’s a winery as well. The Wildflower Cafe is well-known for its breakfasts and morning cocktails, including a variety of mimosas and house bloody marys.

From Alpen Way Chalet Mountain Lodge and other nearby hotels, you can also easily walk to Evergreen Lake, where you’ll find a variety of year-round activities.

Pros of Staying in Downtown Evergreen:

  • Beautiful scenery
  • Lots of great food and shops
  • Close to the lake
  • Lots of nearby family activities

Con of Staying in Downtown Evergreen:

  • Hotels can be pricey

North Central Evergreen is just off I-70 at Evergreen Parkway. It’s close to grocery stores, a Walmart, and other chain stores and restaurants. There is also an excellent farmers market near here in the summer and early fall.

Because it’s so close to the freeway, this is a great spot for stopping on a road trip as well. The Comfort Suites Golden West is a great option in this area, and the hotel is designed to blend nicely with the scenery. It also has the lowest average nightly price of any Evergreen hotel.

Pros of Staying in North Central Evergreen:

  • Less expensive than historic downtown
  • Easy freeway access
  • Quality chain hotel

Con of Staying in North Central Evergreen:

  • Farther from the lake and other town attractions

If you’re looking for a peaceful visit and a place to enjoy the beauty of the area, this is your spot! The Highland Haven Creekside Inn is a hidden gem that’s a great place to stay if you’re visiting Evergreen.

Evergreen is an amazing, charming little town, but there aren’t actually that many hotels within its boundaries. You may be better off staying at a hotel in Morrison and driving about 20 minutes to Evergreen (it’s a beautiful drive!).

This way, you’ll also be close to Red Rocks Amphitheatre. You’ll also have easy access to freeways to visit Denver, Boulder, and other Front Range cities a little faster.

Pros of Staying in the Morrison:

  • More hotel options
  • Closer to freeways and Denver

Con of Staying in the Morrison:

  • About a 20-minute drive to Evergreen

Tips for Staying in Evergreen, CO

A forest in Evergreen under the clear blue sky

You’ll Want A Car

Part of Evergreen’s charm is that it feels secluded in the mountains while being fairly close to downtown Denver. But it’s not close enough to easily get back and forth without a car. You’ll want your own wheels to get from Denver to Evergreen — and if you want to do any hiking, mountain biking, or exploring of nearby towns.

If you’re renting a car for your visit, try Discover Cars. They compare prices on top rental companies to find you the best deal for your trip!

Stay Hydrated

Evergreen sits at 7,165 feet above sea level. The dry climate and thin air mean you’ll want to drink plenty of water while exploring Evergreen attractions!

It’s also likely you’ll be doing a lot of exercising — hiking or paddle boarding or enjoying other outdoor activities. Get a good-sized water bottle and carry it around with you everywhere!

👉 Pro tip: If you could use a new water bottle, check out the Grayl Geopress, a go-to recommendation on Travel Lemming!

Get Out Early

During summer, it can get busy on the lake and local hiking trails — but you’re less likely to encounter crowds early in the morning.

This not only makes activities a little more enjoyable, but it ensures you can find a parking spot. Keep this tip in mind for pretty much all other popular Colorado spots!

Bring Layers

A beautiful summer day can quickly turn chilly in the mountains! On the opposite end, a cold winter day can warm up quickly if the sun comes out.

Bring plenty of layers if you’re planning to be out hiking or spending lots of time outdoors. Be sure to check Abigail’s Colorado packing list for all the essentials.
