Our 50 Best Places to Travel in 2025

Reject AI travel planners. Get your recommendations from actual humans with Travel Lemming’s list of the best places to travel in 2025. Our team of real human travelers loved visiting these 50 places, and we think you will too.

This year’s introduction also comes with an honest warning: corporate billionaires like Google CEO Sundar Pichai and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman want to use AI slop to replace not only travel blogs like ours, but also the thing that makes travel truly great: the human experience.

Resist becoming AI lemmings. In 2025, travel like a human.

Big tech companies like Google and OpenAI want you to entrust your travel planning to artificial intelligence “AI” robots.

This is how tech execs like Sundar Pichai and Sam Altman envision the future of travel: you’ll just press a few buttons, let the AI create an itinerary for you, and follow along blindly like a lemming.

But isn’t human experience a big part of the reason we travel? And, therefore, shouldn’t we rely on the experiences of other humans to inform our decisions about where to travel in 2025?

After all, an AI cannot visit a place.

An AI cannot see, taste, smell, feel, or experience what it is like to travel there.

Only your fellow human beings can do those things.

And that’s why we have a bold challenge for you this year:

In 2025, insist on getting your travel recommendations from other real-life humans.

Don’t know where to start? Well, just keep scrolling for inspiration!

At Travel Lemming, our team of dozens of experts craft helpful travel guides based on personal experience.

Each year, we all come together for a special collaborative project: a mega-list of 50 places we think should be on your bucket list for the coming year.

Last year’s list was themed around “slow travel,” as we encouraged travelers to slow down and avoid a return to the pre-pandemic era of overtourism.

For 2025, we’re encouraging travelers to reject the AI travel planners Silicon Valley wants to shove down our throats. Instead, get your travel suggestions from the same place humans have since the beginning of time: other humans.

We’ve put care and thought into sharing some of our favorite finds so you can follow in our footsteps – or create your own paths to destinations we love.

You could follow Laura’s experience climbing a stunning volcano in our #1 destination.

Or Clara recommends venturing to the ends of the earth in Patagonia to watch a gigantic glacier break apart before your eyes.

Abigail, meanwhile, suggests packing an extra camera battery to explore her favorite corner of Ireland. For outdoors buffs, Taylor spills the tea on a serene alternative to Banff. And for history seekers, Marty explains where you can find ancient Christian churches in Ethiopia.

Wherever you choose to travel in 2025, we hope our real human experiences can help inspire and guide you.

In 2025, our world is becoming artificial in so many ways … but shouldn’t we keep travel a space for the human experience?

Use the handy filter buttons to create a custom list of 2025 travel destinations that match the regions of the world and times of year that you want to travel.

50 Best Places to Travel in 2025

1. Lombok, Indonesia

Travel Lemming writer Laura McFarland on the summit of Mount Rinjani, a volcano in northern Lombok

Budge over, Bali — this island paradise has half the tourists and is half the price. Lombok is flush with gorgeous beaches, active volcanoes, cascading waterfalls, and hospitable locals.

Lombok is the island east of Bali in the Indonesian archipelago, and it’s quickly becoming a hotspot for tourists who prefer to go off the beaten path. It has all the trappings of a flashy vacation destination, but life moves at a slower pace here.

Ride motorbikes through rice paddies and jungles. Hit the waves down south or climb huge, volcanic mountains up north. Travelers can live in a village homestay to experience traditional Indonesian hospitality, whereas the coastal town of Kuta has more Western comforts.

Lombok is predominantly Muslim so you won’t find many beach clubs or raunchy bars. But you will find gorgeous natural surroundings, beautiful mosques, and incredibly welcoming locals. Those seeking a party scene should visit the Gili islands, a small island chain off Lombok’s mainland that’s famous among backpackers for its nightlife.

This town in the northern Amhara region is a splendor of ancient engineering and spirituality. Visit to explore stunning rock-hewn churches that were carved directly into the mountains more than 800 years ago.

Lalibela is an age-old spiritual center in northern Ethiopia known for its rock-hewn churches, which were carved directly into the earth during the 13th century. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a rare opportunity to witness the country’s deep Christian history and constructive genius. It’s a place that has to be seen to be believed.

6. El Nido, Philippines

Travel Lemming writer Clara Kesseler kayaking the Big Lagoon, a popular stop on Tour A

Island-hop your way around a marine landscape filled with tranquil lagoons, secluded beaches, and soaring limestone cliffs covered in lush jungle.

Early every morning, El Nido’s bay fills with bangka, the distinctive Filipino watercraft that ferry visitors from this quaint beach town on the northern tip of Palawan. Tours follow four alphabetically-named routes: Tour A, Tour B, Tour C, and Tour D.

Don’t let the simple naming convention fool you — these are some of the most stunning boat tours on planet Earth, taking visitors through a marine maze of white sand beaches, picturesque islands, and tranquil lagoons.

Tour A is especially not to be missed for its stop at Big Lagoon, a dreamy sliver of calm ocean water where kayaks slowly snake between soaring limestone cliffs covered in rainforest vegetation. If paradise had a last name, it would be “Palawan.”

12. Austin, Texas

Let your weird side shine in Austin. This city emphasizes mom-and-pop shops and indie endeavors. Yet, it maintains an eclectic music scene, culinary offerings to make even connoisseurs salivate, and easy access to natural wonders.

With a slogan like “keep Austin weird,” you know you’re in for a good time. This central Texas city is more than just the state capital. It’s home to creative endeavors and a distinctly Texan droll that give the city irreplicable character.

Austin is especially known for its music scene and attracts musicians and creatives from around the country. Music — or simply just a rollicking good time — is easy to find year-round.

While you’re listening to your favorite tunes, grab barbecue from a food truck, take photos of the city’s many murals, or take a walk on the wild side at Austin’s natural wonders. Watching the bats under South Congress Bridge is a staple, as is cooling off with a dip at McKinney Falls State Park.

13. Nazca, Peru

An aerial view of the Nazca lines which criss-cross the desert

Take a trip to this otherworldly desert city where the art of the ancient Nazca people remains carved into the hillsides and mummies lie in a millennia-old burial ground.

The desert city of Nazca is like nowhere else on Earth. Its archaeological marvels must be seen to be believed.

The Peruvian city was made famous by its incredible Nazca lines — enormous animal shapes that were carved into the landscape by the Nazca people thousands of years ago. The best way to appreciate this UNESCO World Heritage Site is to take a guided flight over the desert expanse.

14. Tokyo, Japan

Travel Lemming founder Nate Hake at The Prince Park Tower Tokyo hotel

With the yen at historic lows against the dollar, there’s never been a more affordable time to explore the world’s largest and most dynamic metropolis.

Why does it feel like everyone is going to Tokyo lately? One explanation is the metropolis’s enduring allure as a cosmopolitan crossroads of cultures and centuries.

Ancient temples and castles sit nestled among some of the world’s tallest skyscrapers. Quiet tea shops lie just around the corner from robot cafes. No matter your travel style, you’ll never run out of interesting things to do and discover in the 62 cities, towns, villages, and wards that make up Tokyo metropolis.

But there’s another reason for Tokyo’s recent popularity: the falling yen. If you’ve assumed a Japan trip was out of your budget, it might be time to re-run the numbers. Japan’s currency is trading at a 30-40% discount against historical averages meaning that for many, 2025 may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit this “city of cities.”

15. Rochester, New York

Travel Lemming editor Chelsea Booker enjoying a coffee in front of High Falls

This underrated mid-sized city packs a punch with historical significance, lively summer festivals, and an offbeat signature dish.

Unpretentious and industrial Rochester won’t win awards for being the prettiest (though, visiting during the annual Lilac Festival may change your mind). What the city lacks in polish, it makes up for in historic appeal, lively summer festivals, and unconventional eats.

Make the Susan B. Anthony House and the George Eastman Museum your first stops in ROC for a peek into women’s history and the history of photography and film. Your next stop is The Strong National Museum of Play. Surprisingly, it’s not just for kids. Unsurprisingly, you’ll leave feeling more in touch with your childhood than before.

Summer brings the Rochester International Jazz Festival, a 9-day event where hundreds of musicians take over the East End for a round-robin of performances, day and night.

During the fest, grab a to-go order of Rochester’s signature dish: a garbage plate. Foodies will likely cringe at the name. But this unexpected assortment of hamburger meat, home fries, and macaroni salad (among other things) will pleasantly surprise your tastebuds.

16. Warsaw, Poland

Warsaw’s colorful Old Town was rebuilt from next to nothing after WWII

Few cities have endured greater hardships and come out better than Warsaw. This thriving metropolis is a powerful testament to the proud legacy of the Polish people.

Warsaw is a miraculous city. You’d hardly believe it was nearly leveled during World War II. That conflict is only one part of Poland’s long and proud history. Warsaw and its many museums are some of the best places to learn about the many chapters of this enduring legacy.

As it relates to music, Warsaw contributed composer Frédéric Chopin to the world and the city continues to host frequent concerts of his famed works. Poland’s cuisine is another matter of pride and, while it’s largely meat-centric, there’s a wide variety of veggie-based dishes, too.

Warsaw is also remarkably affordable for a major European capital, with a generous exchange rate of four złoty to one US dollar. The city is also safe and easy to get around — but be sure to take a day trip or two, as you can’t afford to miss the rest of Poland!

18. Juneau, Alaska

Nugget Falls plunging down the cliffs near Mendenhall Glacier

Massive glaciers, dense forests, and diverse wildlife are just the tip of the iceberg in this remote Southeast Alaska destination — which is only accessible by plane or boat.

Juneau is a must-see if an Alaskan adventure is on your horizon. Epic glaciers abound in this area, with the mighty Mendenhall Glacier just north of town. Mount Roberts is a great place for a hike or, if you prefer, a tram ride. Other trails take you into the tranquil Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest in the world. Here, evergreens wrap everything in an otherworldly stillness.

Juneau is home to the Tlingit, who have stewarded the land since time immemorial. Juneau boomed during Alaska’s gold rush and even today, there are attractions that allow you to pan for gold in local streams. Wildlife is another of Juneau’s treasures and much less elusive. From April through September, whale-watching tours offer a chance to experience these impressive creatures. Bears and eagles are also frequently seen both downtown and by streams where salmon are spawning.

20. Butte, Montana

An American flag tops the remnants of an old mine in Butte, Montana

Go beyond the surface in this former mining town to discover Old West history, epic outdoor attractions, and an unexpected celebration of Irish heritage.

On its surface, Butte may seem like a sleepy small town but it hides a mother lode of Old West history. It was the epicenter of a major copper boom in the 1880s. There are several museums in and below Butte that shed light on its underground history, whether mineral or criminal — it was the Wild West, after all.

Every August, Butte celebrates its Irish heritage with the lively An Rí Rá Festival. Being a good Montana town, there are some excellent steakhouses and bars, and even a speakeasy tucked away in the historic Miner’s Hotel. Butte also has a wealth of great hiking trails tracing their way through the surrounding countryside, Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park, and Lost Creek State Park.

Views of an eco-lodge on Nanuya Balavu Island

Snorkel above vibrant coral reefs, relax on white sand beaches, and stay in surprisingly affordable waterfront bungalows on these tiny and accessible Fijian islands.

Fiji has managed to do tourism right. The Yasawa Islands are popular among tourists due to their proximity to the mainland, but they never feel crowded or exploited. You won’t find any large hotels here. Instead, most resorts are simple, small bungalows built into the natural landscape.

The Yasawa Islands are filled with culture and activities. Snorkel with manta rays, swim above spectacular coral reefs, learn to spearfish, and drink some kava — or just relax on a white sand beach with a cocktail in hand. Once you’re on island time, it’s easy to detach.

The best part? Accommodations are surprisingly affordable. Private cottages set just steps from the beach average around $80 USD a night. Whether you’re at a homestay or a resort, the hospitality is some of the best in the world.

29. Bergen, Norway

Bryggen (the old wharf) is the city’s most iconic site, but it is far from the only thing to see

Historic European charm melds perfectly with modern amenities in this city. Admire sites in its walkable downtown and experience the region’s wild expanse.

Bergen is a perfect “Goldilocks” city — not too big, not too small; not too modern, not too dated; not too slow-paced, nor too chaotic. Like most European destinations, it has centuries of history documented in museums and displayed at sites. It’s easy to reach many of these attractions within its walkable downtown and via public transportation.

I recommend staying in a hotel near Bryggen because there is not a more beautiful place to start your day. Adventurous travelers should take advantage of the stunning environment by hiking the surrounding mountains or boating through the fjords.

“America’s fruit basket” nourishes the mind and body. This western region features 30+ wineries, Palisade peach orchards, and scenic outdoor escapes.

Postcards of Colorado often picture ski lifts and towering peaks, but the state’s landscapes are more diverse than you may know. A prime example is Grand Valley, set west of the Continental Divide. Hikers within the area’s national monument come across crimson canyons, fragrant sagebrush, and whimsical rock formations.

Meanwhile, aspen forests and more than three hundred lakes lie throughout nearby Grand Mesa, the largest flat-top mountain in the world. The Colorado and Gunnison Rivers also converge here, and the abundance of freshwater makes this agricultural region thrive.

Dozens of vineyards produce high-altitude wines, and some have châteaus open to overnight guests. Family-run orchards allow visitors to pick their own cherries and stone fruits, and restaurants make use of the local bounty. All is simply peachy here on the Western Slope.

This small, eastern town is often overlooked but holds immense cultural and historical significance. Visit a Taíno ceremonial site, Spanish Empire-era ruins, and more.

Set near destinations like Naguabo and Humacao, Las Piedras is often overlooked by travelers passing through the island’s eastern region. But this town offers lots of history and culture. 42. Santander, Spain

Santander’s beautiful waterfront promenade

Plan a luxurious summer getaway to the Cantabria region’s capital. Surrounded by the mountains and the sea, it’s one of the most underrated beach destinations in Spain.

Santander, Cantabria’s elegant capital, was a summer destination favored by royalty and it’s easy to see why. The city sits along the Cantabrian Sea and idyllic beaches line its shores. Breathtaking mountain views are all around. It’s the best of both worlds.

Adventure reigns here. There are endless opportunities for kayaking, cycling, hiking, and surfing. The Camino del Norte walking route even passes through town. The less adventurous can claim a spot on the beach and work on their tan, or take the ferry to Playa del Puntal and enjoy spectacular views of the city.

Chic apartments line the Paseo de Pereda. Early evenings are the best for strolling this luxurious promenade. Visit the Palacio de la Magdalena to see how royalty lived and catch a cool art exhibition at the Centro Botín. Santander’s plazas are also a delight. Pull up a seat on an outdoor terrace and enjoy the city’s famous seafood.

43. Bellingham, Washington

Travel Lemming editor Chelsea Booker admiring the views over a cove in Larrabee State Park

Northern Washington’s largest city is defined by its youthful culture, historic district, and outdoor escapes. Explore an active volcano, a secluded island, and a mountainous national park.

Bellingham is what you get when proximity to natural attractions merges with a quirky and youthful city. It lies in the shadows of Mt. Baker, an active volcano, and North Cascades National Park peaks. Under-the-radar Lummi Island is only half an hour away. Larrabee State Park, full of starfish-laden coves and sunset-friendly mountaintops, is fifteen minutes from downtown.

In the city center, local attractions are abuzz year-round. Watch electrical shows at the SPARK Museum, taste off-beat flavors at Mallard Ice Cream, and escape to Istanbul with a single sip of Turkish coffee at Ashuri Baklava Cafe.

Red-brick buildings in quaint, mural-packed Fairhaven Village will transport travelers to the late 19th century. Tucked within village limits are gems like an art deco cocktail bar and a locally renowned three-story bookstore.

Travel Lemming writer Ruthie Walters perusing shops in Dortmund, Germany

From the world’s tallest Christmas tree to Germany’s largest stadium, Dortmund is a city with industrial charm and a growing reputation as a cool tourist destination.

Dortmund is often overlooked by tourists. However, since Signal Iduna Park hosted matches for the Euros 2024 football championship, word is getting out that this unassuming, industrial city in North Rhine-Westphalia makes for a pretty cool trip.

The city center casually brings together several highlights: the German Football Museum, Dortmunder U (a former-brewery-turned-cultural-center), historic churches, modern shopping complexes, urban green spaces, and cozy bars.

If you visit during the annual holiday market, you’ll even get a chance to see the world’s largest Christmas tree standing more than 45 meters (150 feet) tall!

46. Taormina, Italy

Teatro Antico di Taormina

This stunningly scenic, yet widely unknown town lies on the east coast of Sicily. It’s set in the shadow of Mount Etna and is home to impressive ancient Greek ruins.

Taormina, Sicily is a picture of Mediterranean perfection. Impressive ancient structures like Teatro Antico pull you back in time, local attractions like Villa Comunale di Taormina make you feel like you’ve landed in a dreamland, and Mount Etna looms in the distance. All the while, the town buzzes with visitors.

Taormina is no stranger to tourism. Some might even know about it from the hit TV show The White Lotus. But compared to more popular Italian destinations like Positano and the towns of Cinque Terre, Taormina is unknown — and like the rest of Sicily, easily overlooked but well worth experiencing.

49. Cartagena, Spain

Travel Lemming writer Louise Wylie in Cartagena, Spain

Explore an ancient city with Roman ruins, savor seafood-centric tapas, and enjoy a balmy microclimate while lounging on uncrowded beaches. This may be Spain’s best-kept secret.

Cartagena is criminally underrated as a tourist destination in Spain. Its location on the country’s southeast coast gives it pleasant weather year-round, which you can enjoy at the secluded Cala Cortina beach.

History buffs will marvel at the Roman forum and expansive theatre — remarkably only rediscovered in 1988. The city’s best views can be found at Castillo de la Concepción, a hilltop castle dating back to the Middle Ages and home to a flock of peacocks.

Hikers have options aplenty in the mountains overlooking the port city, and foodies have to try the local seafood-centric tapas.

50. Laugarvatn, Iceland

Views above the geothermal pools and Lake Laugarvatn

Soak in geothermal springs, bask in saunas with panoramic views, and cold plunge in this village’s namesake lake. These healing activities are scientifically proven to detoxify the body.

Welcome to one of the world’s best relaxation destinations. A “treat yourself” mindset is required in Laugarvatn. Indulge in outdoor spas, geothermal springs, steam rooms, and cold plunges at this lakeside resort town. It’s located along the Golden Circle where you can explore some of Iceland’s most famous natural attractions.

Another perk of this Icelandic gem is fewer tourists compared to nearby Reykjavík. You’ll notice much smaller crowds at the hot springs, lakes, and attractions here than in the capital city. This is undoubtedly one of the most peaceful and healing getaways on the planet.

Travel Lemming’s list of places to travel is our biggest annual project. It is a collaborative effort of our team of dozens of travel experts.

We determine the list in three phases: a nomination phase, a selection phase, and a fact-checking phase.

Nomination phase: In September, each of our dozens of expert travel writers submit nominations for their favorite hidden gems around the world.

Selection phase: In November, our editorial board votes on which nominees should make the cut, and also rates them so we can order the list.

Travel Lemming’s editorial board this year consisted of:

Nate Hake (Editor in Chief)

Taylor Herperger (Marketing Director & Senior Editor)

Lea Rose Allbaugh (Managing Editor)

Abigail Bliss (Editor)

Elizabeth Demolat (Editor)

Chelsea Booker (Editor)

Rachel Davey and Marty Sebova of Very Hungry Nomads (guest board members who completed their quest to visit every country in the world)

Fact-Checking phase: Next, our editors go through the entries with a fine-toothed comb to ensure factual accuracy. We double and triple-check details through an extensive process that includes outreach to local tourism boards to make sure our recommendations are factually correct, up-to-date, and aligned with local community goals (note: this communication only occurs after list selection, which is done entirely independently).

The end result is what we think is our best list yet – and we hope you do too! Of course, all “best of” lists are inherently subjective, and ours is no different. There are many amazing places to travel that we didn’t have space for this year – but there’s always next year’s list of places to travel!
