I’m a Denver local and when I need a quick getaway, Colorado Springs is one of my go-to spots.

If it’s your first time visiting, I most recommend staying on the west side of town near Garden of the Gods. Along with popular attractions, this scenic area features one of Colorado’s most stunning five-star resorts: The Broadmoor. It’s perfect for a luxurious retreat, complete with golfing, spa services, and gourmet dining.

But there are many other places to stay in Colorado Springs. Below, I share a quick summary of my favorite hotels for families, budget travelers, business, and more — along with the pros and cons of key areas around town.

Tips for Staying in Colorado Springs

Rent a Car

There are some cities in Colorado that you can visit and not need your own wheels. But if you want to explore attractions in Colorado Springs or make a day trip to Denver, then you’ll want a rental car.

The exception to this is if you’re traveling to town for business. Hotels near the Colorado Springs airport usually offer free airport shuttle transportation and you can find places to eat and drink at your hotel or nearby.

🚗 Pro Tip: Discover Cars is a great place to look for a Colorado Springs rental car.

Drink Lots of Water

A woman drinking her water during sunrise

You’ll want to drink lots of water while you’re in Colorado Springs, or anywhere in Colorado. Staying hydrated will help your body to better deal with the challenges of higher altitudes. Also, if you’re out exploring, you’ll likely be using a lot of energy and will need to make sure you stay hydrated for that reason as well.

Always Wear Sunscreen

The high altitude can also do a number on your skin. Make sure you apply sunscreen liberally and often. This is another one of those things it’s easy to forget in the winter months but the reflection from the snow makes it even more important to protect yourself.

Sunscreen for sensitive skin like La Roche-Posay Sunscreen Milk works great for the face, with a sport sunscreen for arms and legs.

Spend a Day Acclimating

Don’t plan to summit Pikes Peak, one of Colorado’s iconic 14ers, the day after you get into town. Spend a day or two doing some easy sightseeing — strolling the cute historic streets or visiting a Colorado Springs museum. Let your body adjust for a bit before tackling more strenuous outdoor activities.

Plan Your Trip

From hikes near Colorado Springs to cultural sites and afternoon tea at an actual castle, there’s a lot to do in this city. Plan ahead to make the most of your visit — and be sure to consider day trips from Colorado Springs, too.
