About Meow Wolf

How it Started

Meow Wolf began after a group of Santa Fe artists met in 2008 wanting to collaborate.

The group included graphic designers, writers, sculptors, techies, and other artists. At the first meeting, everyone put two words into a hat. Someone drew two words…and that’s how the endeavor got its name Meow Wolf.

There are currently four locations: Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Denver, and Grapevine, Texas. A fifth one is scheduled to open in Houston in 2024, and a sixth location is slated to open in Los Angeles in 2026. Each exhibition in each city has its own story. Local artists also display work in each of the different locations.

The first Meow Wolf, House of Eternal Return, opened in Santa Fe in 2008, followed by the Las Vegas Omega Mart Location. Denver’s Meow Wolf location – Convergence Station – opened in 2021.

How to Experience Convergence Station

You can experience the Meow Wolf exhibitions in one of two ways.

First, you can learn the backstory of the location you’re visiting. You’ll find exhibits that add to the narrative and clues that advance the story. There are special places to find clues throughout the exhibits and hidden things to activate.

The second way is to walk through the exhibits without paying attention to the underlying story. Admire the art, listen to the music, see the psychedelic lighting, and enjoy the experience on its own terms. Don’t feel like you have to dive deep into the mythology to enjoy a visit! This is a low-key way to experience the exhibition on a date night in Denver

The Lore of Convergence Station

A sketch of Pam Rodriguez displayed inside Meow Wolf
Pam Rodriguez was caught in a vortex … and never heard from again.

The story of Meow Wolf’s Convergence Station merges its real-world location with other fantasy worlds. The backstory is that, in 1994, Pam Rodriguez drove her bus through the vortex in Sun Valley (the real-world location of Convergence Station near Empower Field in Denver.)

Four alien worlds joined in a rare cosmic event, and you can now visit all four of those worlds. At the time of the vortex, residents of these worlds lost their memories. You can collect and trade memories like currency on your visits.

When you arrive, you’ll start at the Quantum Department of Transportation (Q-DOT) and journey into the four worlds.

The Four Worlds

C Street is a cosmic trash city and a former sanitation district. It will probably be the first world you encounter as you explore.

There’s art made from trash and outdated appliances, as well as odd vehicles and secret passageways to other rooms. Look around at the unusual architecture as well – the buildings are varied and interesting.

In particular, look for the laundromat in C Street, and you’ll find an old pay phone. Pick it up, and you can call the Omega Mart in Las Vegas. There’s also a mini-mart nearby with products from Omega Mart. In the same area, you’ll see surveillance footage of people wandering around – those are actual visitors to Omega Mart.

Eemia is an ice world. It was once an important and thriving planet but is now inhabited by just a few people.

Eemia is best known for its striking cathedral. Inside the cathedral is an interactive experience with ever-changing lights, levers to pull, and wheels to turn.

The botanical-feeling world of Numina.

Numina is actually one six-dimensional plant that knows things. Everything in Numina comes from a single cell or is a visitor that has been welcomed in. It feels like a magical botanic garden.

Ossuary is home to the Library and a large repository for memories. Ossuary is the center of the memory economy that has sprung up in this alternate universe. It has lots of corridors leading off from the main room, so do plenty of exploring.

Unless you’re at Meow Wolf for a special event, you’ll want to spend most of your time exploring the four alien worlds here – C Street, Eemia, Numina, and Ossuary.

However, there are more things to experience here than just the exhibits:

🌮 Food & Drink – The HELLOFOOD Cafe & Bar offers food and drinks from local Colorado vendors for purchase. The menu changes seasonally but can include entrees like rice bowls and tacos, grab-and-go options like salads, and kids’ snack packs. Drinks, both alcoholic and non, are also available.

Sips (with a Z) is a cocktail bar and intergalactic travel lounge. You’ll find handcrafted cocktails and light snacks. The bar is open from 12 pm – Close Friday & Saturday and from 12 pm – 7 pm Sundays.

⭐ The Perplixiplex – The Perplexiplex is the concert space at Convergence Station. It can hold 488 people for concerts with local and national artists throughout the year. You can purchase a concert ticket just to attend a show.

If you want to explore Convergence Station before the concert, you’ll need a separate admission ticket for that (and don’t forget to reserve your spot!)

During normal hours, the Perplexiplex plays soothing music. It has projected images that make you feel like you’re inside an otherworldly arboretum.

🎨 The Galleri Gallery – The Galleri Gallery is a changing space where Denver artists can show and sell their work. You’ll find rotating art exhibits in a variety of mediums.

Different kinds of souvenirs inside the Gift Shop in Meow Wolf
The gift shop has some very unusual souvenirs!

🎁 Gift Shop – There is a gift shop that you can visit at the end of your trip. Some items aren’t available online – you’ll only find them here in the shop. You can also visit the gift shop without going into the exhibit. Check-in with the security team at the entrance, and they’ll escort you in to shop for up to one hour.

Tips for Visiting Convergence Station

Know What Items are Allowed Inside

View of narrow walkways in Meow Wolf
Walkways are narrow, so strollers aren’t allowed.

You can bring the following into Convergence Station:

  • Empty water bottles
  • Drugs or medications with an appropriate prescription label
  • Diaper bags – see security for a diaper bag check and tag that allows you to bring the bag into the exhibit
  • Baby carriers

These items are prohibited inside the exhibition:

  • Strollers – there is a small area outside where strollers can be stored, but it’s best not to bring them
  • Weapons, including concealed carry firearms
  • Vape pens or electric cigarettes
  • Outside food, beverages, or alcohol
  • Gum
  • Federally illegal drugs, including marijuana
  • Luggage, large bags, or large purses
  • Professional recording equipment, tripods, or selfie sticks
  • Umbrellas
  • Animals other than service animals
  • Masks that obscure the face, unless medically needed

Purchase a QPASS to Dive Deeper

A QPASS kiosk where you can trade memories.

When The Convergence happened, and the four worlds collided, all of the residents in each world lost their memories. Visitors who have a QPASS can use it at various kiosks throughout the exhibit and learn the history and stories of some of the residents.

You can collect, trade, and share memories, or MEMs, as you go. You can continue to use your QPASS each time you visit, and it will store your activity for the next visit. A QPASS can also change the lights and music in some exhibit areas.

Buy Tickets in Advance

Meow Wolf Convergence Station frequently sells out. If you know this is an activity in Denver you definitely want to do, buy tickets in advance.

Move Your Body

View of the colorful Eemia Cathedral from above
Gazing down on the cathedral.

There is stuff to see from all sorts of weird angles at Meow Wolf. Get down low to see things you might otherwise miss. Move in close to look at the walls, ceiling, tiles, and other details. Be ready to walk through low halls and odd walkways. Pop your head up inside a gopher-like exhibit.

You’ll find all sorts of interesting things many people miss simply by taking a different angle or getting on another level.

Be Ready to Interact

Often, staff members mingle and talk with guests while play-acting as residents of the worlds. You’ll enjoy yourself if you talk to them and look at what they’re drawing or doing.

The last time I was there, an employee was drawing memories on small scraps of paper and trading them for drawings we made ourselves.

Lines are Outside, so Dress Appropriately

Even if you have a timed entrance, you may have to wait in line for a bit. Make sure to dress warmly if it’s cold or snowy out.
