27 Best Denver Day Trips
Rocky Mountain National Park
Admire wildlife and alpine views while exploring this iconic destination’s hiking trails and scenic drives.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours | 📍 Google Maps | Rocky Mountain National Park Website | 👉 Book a Day Trip Tour from Denver
Rocky Mountain National Park is my top-recommended day trip from Denver. This destination is home to stunning alpine lakes, hikes for all abilities, and iconic Colorado wildlife including moose, elk, and even black bears.
The park also features two scenic drives: Old Fall River Road, a steep dirt path past waterfalls and forest; and Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuously paved road in the country. Admire tundra and dramatic summits on the latter route, which connects the towns of Grand Lake and Estes Park during peak season.
👉 Local Tip: Rocky Mountain National Park requires timed entry permits from May 23 to October 20, 2025. Take note of access areas and plan ahead!
Estes Park
Stop to explore this historic and entertaining town on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours | 📍 Google Maps | Estes Park Website | Things to Do in Estes Park
Estes Park is the eastern gateway into Rocky Mountain National Park. While local places to stay grant more time to explore, you can also experience this quaint mountain town on a quick day trip.
I especially recommend visiting The Stanley Hotel, famed for inspiring Stephen King’s The Shining.
Downtown Estes Park is also a charming area to stroll. Pop into ice cream and taffy shops, sample whiskey at Elkins Distilling, and shop for souvenirs. If you want to play outdoors, consider paddleboarding on Lake Estes or taking a horseback ride into the national park.
Grand Lake
The western gateway into Rocky Mountain National Park is also a beloved boating destination.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Grand Lake Website
Grand Lake is a popular getaway in the summer months, as the seasonal Trail Ridge Road funnels visitors in from Rocky Mountain National Park. This west side of the park features the Holzwarth Historic Site, Adams Falls, and other picture-worthy sites.
Boating is also a key draw, with marinas located along both Grand Lake and the adjacent Shadow Mountain Lake. My family rented a pontoon here in the past and compared to other destinations, rates are pretty affordable. Cruise around until sunset while taking in the panoramic mountain views.
Garden of the Gods
This free mountain park in Colorado Springs features family-friendly trails among incredible rock formations.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Garden of the Gods Website | 👉 Book a Garden of the Gods & Pikes Peak Tour
Garden of the Gods is an incredible mountain park located on the west side of Colorado Springs. It’s famous for its dramatic red rock formations backdropped by Pikes Peak.
Many of the trails are paved and relatively flat, making this park especially ideal for families. Wander the grounds and pack a picnic, and be sure to pop into its impressive visitor center. It discusses the history and geology of the destination, as well as a fascinating dinosaur fossil discovery.
And the best part? Experiencing Garden of the Gods is entirely free.
Pikes Peak
Hike, bike, drive, or catch a train to the top of this famous 14,000-foot mountain in Colorado Springs.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 2 hours to 2 hours 40 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Pikes Peak Website | 👉 Book a Pikes Peak Jeep Tour
Views from Pikes Peak’s 14,115-foot summit famously inspired Katharine Lee Bates’ opening lyrics of “America the Beautiful.” You can reach this historic mountaintop via a few methods.
Though Pikes Peak is one of the easier Colorado 14ers, hiking or biking to the summit is a serious challenge. Driving to the peak is another option and accessible year-round.
However, my favorite mode of transit is the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. It’s situated higher than any other railway in the world and among the most scenic train rides in Colorado.
Royal Gorge Bridge & Park
Walk across the country’s highest suspension bridge and ride a scenic train through this Cañon City destination.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 2 hours 10 minutes to 3 hours | 📍 Google Maps | Royal Gorge Bridge & Park Website | 👉 Book a Royal Gorge Rafting Trip
This Cañon City destination features the highest suspension bridge in the country. It’s wide and very stable — but if you have a fear of heights, maybe don’t peer down to the rushing Arkansas River nearly 1,000 feet below.
The upper portion of the park also features a gondola ride across the gap, plus thrilling experiences like a via ferrata, zip line, and skycoaster.
Those who would rather remain planted on the ground should take the Royal Gorge Railroad. Though short, I loved the cliff views, especially from the open-air rail car.
Boulder
This nearby college town is full of outdoor activities, local restaurants and retailers, and more year-round fun.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 30 minutes to 50 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Boulder Website | Boulder Travel Guides
Though many consider Boulder as part of the Metro area, it offers a totally different vibe than Denver. My brother lives in this college town and I visit often for its incredible hiking trails, impressive dining scene (which includes lots of craft breweries), a great selection of local shops, and more fun things to do.
For a quick day trip, I’d recommend a walk along the Flatirons rock formations at Chautauqua Park. Alternatively, go tubing down Boulder Creek! Then, grab lunch and wander the shops along Pearl Street — and during the summer, don’t miss the fantastic Boulder farmers market. Come evening, drive up Flagstaff Mountain for sunset views of the city.
Eldorado Canyon State Park
Rock climbers and hikers love this Boulder-area state park featuring towering cliffs and views of the Continental Divide.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 35 minutes to 50 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Eldorado Canyon State Park Website
Eldorado Canyon is located just south of downtown Boulder and is one of the best Colorado state parks. It’s especially popular among rock climbers, but hikers of all abilities will appreciate its towering cliff views, too. The moderate, 3-mile Rattlesnake Gulch Trail is one of my favorites in the park. Admire views of the Continental Divide and explore ruins from the Crags Hotel.
Given its proximity to the Metro area, Eldorado Canyon can get busy during peak season. Note that on weekends and holidays from May to September, timed entry permits are required.
Fort Collins
Beer lovers and outdoor enthusiasts can’t miss this college town near the Wyoming border.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour to 1 hour 40 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Fort Collins Website | Things to Do in Fort Collins
Fort Collins is a fun college town near the Colorado-Wyoming border. Take a quick drive up I-25 to experience its outdoor attractions, like paddleboarding on Horsetooth Reservoir and hiking in Lory State Park.
Downtown is also a gem full of boutiques, bike shops, bookstores, and charming cafes. Craft breweries are also big in Fort Collins. Some of my favorites include Odell, New Belgium, and Breckenridge Brewery, as well as smaller operations like Maxline and Funkwerks. Stick around until nightfall, as this city has one of the few remaining drive-in movie theaters in Colorado.
Idaho Springs
Summer rafting, scenic autumn drives, and hot spring soaks — this nearby mountain town has it all.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Idaho Springs Website | Things to Do in Idaho Springs
Idaho Springs is my top-recommended destination for whitewater rafting near Denver. Several outfitters offer tours for all abilities. If you want to get your adrenaline pumping, visit in June when Clear Creek is high from spring snowmelt. Even in a wet suit, splashing into 40-degree water is sure to wake you up!
Autumn is also a great time to experience this mountain town. Nearby Guanella Pass is one of the best leaf-peeping spots around. After a day outdoors, take a dip at the hot springs closest to Denver or check out local craft breweries, like Tommyknocker and Westbound & Down.
Georgetown
This year-round destination is loved for its scenic train ride and outdoor activities around Georgetown Lake.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Georgetown Website
As you drive west on I-70, two markers indicate that you’re approaching Georgetown: a herd of bighorn sheep to your right and sparkling Georgetown Lake to your left. Kayakers dot the water in the summer, while ice fishing tents appear during the winter months. Georgetown Lake also hosts exciting ice racing events, which welcome both drivers and spectators.
But the most famous attraction in this mountain town is the Georgetown Loop Railroad. Take the historic and scenic ride, which also features a seasonal tour into one of the area’s former silver mines.
I especially recommend an autumn excursion, but the holidays are also ideal. Children will love the Santa train, complete with cookies, hot chocolate, and roasted chestnuts.
Keystone
Experience family-friendly slopes at the ski resort or head into the national forest for a quiet retreat.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Keystone Website | Things to Do in Keystone
Just past the Eisenhower Tunnel, you’ll see Lake Dillon — and on the east side of the water lies Keystone. This destination is famous for Keystone Resort, one of the ski areas closest to Denver. It’s especially ideal for families with a spacious learning area and other activities like mountaintop tubing, ice skating, and the world’s largest snow fort.
While Keystone itself may seem crowded, Montezuma Road leads to remote areas that are great for summer hiking and camping. Come wintertime, get a permit to cut down your Christmas tree in the surrounding national forest!
Frisco
From summer cycling to cross-country skiing, this little mountain town along Lake Dillon charms guests in all seasons.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours | 📍 Google Maps | Frisco Website | Things to Do in Frisco
For almost a decade, my husband and I have celebrated every Valentine’s Day in Frisco. We also got married around Lake Dillon — so yes, I may be biased. But I think this tiny mountain town is an absolute gem.
Spend the warm season exploring local hiking trails, biking around Lake Dillon, and paddleboarding near the marina. Come wintertime, go tubing at Frisco Adventure Park and check out the Nordic center. It hosts charming sleigh rides and one of my favorite festivals in Colorado: BrewSki. Expect goofy costumes, cross-country skiing, and craft beer tastings.
Breckenridge
This quintessential Colorado town features a world-class ski resort, iconic hiking trails, and can’t-miss festivals.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Breckenridge Website | Things to Do in Breckenridge
Local Epic Pass holders are well familiar with Breckenridge Ski Resort’s iconic five peaks. Many would agree that it’s one of the best ski areas in Colorado. Additionally, this mountain town offers an incredible après-ski scene and fantastic winter festivals. Don’t miss Ullr Fest in December and the International Snow Sculpture Championships in January.
Summer in Breckenridge is equally as fun. Mine tours, horseback rides, and scenic hikes are a few of the highlights. If you’re in shape, check out the views from McCullough Gulch and the 14,000-foot summit of Quandary Peak.
Leadville
Hit the slopes and cheer on skijoring teams in the winter, or embark on summer hikes in the country’s highest-elevation city.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Leadville Website | Things to Do in Leadville
Leadville is located at 10,200 feet and is famed as the country’s highest-elevation city. Victorian architecture lines the main drag, full of Old West-style saloons and other historic sites.
Downtown is especially exciting during its winter skijoring event. If you’re not familiar with the outlandish sport, picture a person on horseback racing past obstacles with a skier in tow!
This town is also home to the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center, as well as Ski Cooper, an affordable and family-friendly ski area. I also love visiting Leadville in the summer, namely for its 14er hikes and recreation around nearby Twin Lakes.
Twin Lakes
This small community lies in the shadow of Colorado’s tallest peak and leads to a stunning mountain drive.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 2 hours to 3 hours | 📍 Google Maps | Twin Lakes Website
Twin Lakes is located just south of Leadville. Mount Elbert, the tallest mountain in Colorado, towers above the tiny community and large alpine lakes. Enjoy kayaking and paddleboarding on the water, or hike along the shore to the former Interlaken Resort. Several other trails form switchbacks that lead all the way up to 14,000 feet.
For similar views with far less effort, journey along Independence Pass. This seasonally-open route is one of my favorite scenic drives in Colorado. It leads to the iconic mountain town of Aspen.
However, if you make it that far, I’d suggest booking one of several places to stay. Aspen is better suited as a weekend trip from Denver given the distance and numerous things to do.
Buena Vista
Hike in the Collegiate Peaks, raft down the Arkansas River, and recharge in hot springs — this town is a favorite among locals.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 2 hours to 2 hours 45 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Buena Vista Website | Things to Do in Buena Vista
While destinations like Vail and Aspen appeal to luxury travelers, Buena Vista offers a more local feel. In my opinion, this is what makes it one of the best mountain towns in Colorado.
Hike throughout the nearby Collegiate Peaks, which give the destination its namesake “good view.” Buena Vista is also loved for its fly fishing and whitewater rafting along the Arkansas River. Additionally, it’s home to three hot spring resorts — perfect for recharging and relaxing after an exciting day outdoors.
Granby
From rodeos and dude ranches to its classic diner, this community is a true slice of Americana.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Granby Website
Granby is a small community located south of Grand Lake, not far from Rocky Mountain National Park. Cattle pay the bills in these parts, and several dude ranch destinations like C Lazy U and Devil’s Thumb Ranch welcome guests to their large estates. Ride horses, fly fish, cross-country ski, and enjoy many more outdoor activities with all-inclusive stays.
The 4th of July is a great time to visit, as the town celebrates with an all-American parade and rodeo competitions. But no matter when you swing through, don’t miss Showboat’s Drive-By Pie and Debbie’s Drive-In for a sense of nostalgia and tasty eats.
Winter Park
Head into the backcountry or take a train from Union Station to this community’s world-class ski resort.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Winter Park Website
This community is built around its world-class ski area, Winter Park Resort. Visitors will find terrain for all skill levels, plus winter activities like tubing, ice skating, and scenic snowcat tours. Unlike other ski destinations, you can reach Winter Park via a train from Denver’s Union Station.
However, those who drive can access my favorite spot to ski in this region: Berthoud Pass. If you have avalanche safety gear and backcountry skills, don’t miss out.
Black Hawk & Central City
Place your bets in historic saloons and explore nearby sites, including one of Colorado’s ghost towns.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Black Hawk Website
The neighboring towns of Black Hawk and Central City are known for their dozens of casinos. Gambling in historic halls and saloons transports visitors to the Wild West.
But even if betting isn’t your thing, these destinations are worth a trip. Admire Victorian architecture, tour a former gold mine, embark on a scenic hike, or even play a round of disc golf in nearby Nevadaville, one of several ghost towns in Colorado.
Nederland
Ski Eldora Mountain or trek into the backcountry when visiting this quirky mountain town.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Nederland Website | Things to Do in Nederland
The town of Nederland is about as quirky as they come. Locals take pride in their laid-back vibe, crystal shops, kava cafes, and more cannabis dispensaries than liquor stores. But local breweries draw a crowd on winter weekends with Eldora Mountain ski slopes just up the road.
Summer is also a popular time to visit with so many phenomenal hiking areas nearby. Endless exploration awaits in the Indian Peaks and James Peak Wilderness. I especially recommend a trek to Lost Lake, which is a great day hike or beginner backpacking trip.
Golden
This foothills town is loved for its outdoor activities, geological wonders, and good ol’ Coors Brewing Company.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 25 minutes to 40 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Golden Website | Things to Do in Golden
Golden is a large town in the Denver foothills. Despite its proximity to the city, many destinations feel far removed from the urban hustle. This includes Golden Gate Canyon State Park, one of my favorite places for autumn leaf peeping. It’s also among the best places to camp near Denver. Other local mountain parks offer incredible rock climbing and mountain biking.
You can also float on a tube right through downtown Golden, drive up Lookout Mountain for city views, and check out the massive Coors Brewery. Colorado School of Mines also makes this a great place to learn about local geology, from its university museum to nearby Dinosaur Ridge.
Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre
This iconic outdoor venue in Morrison is free to visit — but if you can, plan to attend one of its incredible events.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 20 minutes to 40 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Red Rocks Website | 👉 Book a Red Rocks & Foothills Tour
Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a must on any Denver itinerary. This outdoor music venue is in Morrison, a foothills town set southwest of the city. If you can, attend a concert or another experience like movie screenings or morning yoga.
However, simply seeing Red Rocks is worth your time. When it isn’t hosting an event, the amphitheatre is open to the public. Stand on the stage where iconic artists have performed and climb nearly 200 steps to the top plaza.
Alternatively, get some exercise on a nearby trail. The surrounding park is home to some of the best hikes near Denver.
Roxborough State Park
Hike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski at this Littleton state park located just southwest of the city.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 40 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Roxborough State Park Website
Exploring Roxborough State Park is one of my favorite things to do in Littleton. This destination southwest of Denver is easily accessible, yet feels far removed from the city.
The challenging trail up Carpenter Peak offers panoramic views, while the Fountain Valley Loop allows you to cross-country ski among red rock formations. Roxborough is also a fantastic place to view summer wildflowers and local wildlife, including black bears!
Evergreen
Enjoy fantastic restaurants, Denver’s nearest ski area, and more mountain town experiences.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 35 minutes to 55 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Evergreen Website | Things to Do in Evergreen
The affluent mountain town of Evergreen is set in the Denver foothills. Take a quick day trip to experience some of its key attractions. These include ice skating on Evergreen Lake, skiing at Echo Mountain, and hiking at several mountain parks.
Evergreen also has a charming downtown district and a great dining scene. Stop into Beau Jo’s for a slice of Colorado-style pizza, enjoy a wine tasting at Creekside Cellars, or book a waterfront table at Willow Creek Restaurant.
Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge
See herds of bison, nesting bald eagles, and more local wildlife at this free attraction in Commerce City.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 20 minutes to 35 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | Rocky Mountain Arsenal Website
You wouldn’t guess it when visiting today, but Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge was formerly a chemical weapons manufacturing site. In recent years, the city restored the local ecosystem and now, it’s home to more than 330 species.
Embark on its wildlife safari to see bison, prairie dogs, mule and white-tailed deer, coyotes, bald eagles, and much more. The refuge also features scenic trails which are great for hiking, cross-country skiing, and other recreation.
The Wild Animal Sanctuary
The rescued animals at this Keenesburg refuge now thrive in massive habitats, which you can view from an elevated walkway.

🗺️ Distance from Denver: 40 minutes to 50 minutes | 📍 Google Maps | The Wild Animal Sanctuary Website
There are so many family-friendly activities in Denver but in my opinion, few rival the Wild Animal Sanctuary. This Keenesburg attraction features a mile-long elevated walking path. According to the sanctuary, this viewing method causes far less stress to the animals compared to eye-level zoo exhibits.
Creating a safe, enriching environment is everything to the Wild Animal Sanctuary, which rescues its animals from defunct zoos, illegal roadside attractions, and other inhumane conditions. Visit to see its lions, tigers, bears, wolves, and more thrive in their expansive 33,000-acre home.

I hope you enjoyed reading my guide! For more local insights, see our list of the best places to visit in Colorado.

I have cousins (adults) who visit every few years and we’re always looking for day trips out of Denver. We’ve done a number of the ones you have on your list and enjoyed all of them. One day trip that I don’t see on your list that we enjoyed was the Georgetown railroad. We road the train, took the mine tour and panned for gold. Totally cheesy but also fun.
The Georgetown railroad is a great one too! Thank you for sharing!
Hi, we went to the Paint Mines Interpretive Park in Calhan (closer to the Springs), which is a neat day trip (although better I suppose if you’re staying in CO Springs)
What about Sand Dunes?
Great Sand Dunes National Park is another great one (and high on our list of places to visit in Colorado). It is an almost 4 hour drive from Denver and requires a lot of time to explore. So, for me it’s better done as an overnight trip from Denver, but it’s certainly possible to make it as part of a long day trip!
