Disney’s Animal Kingdom frequently gets called a “half-day park”. I couldn’t disagree more and want to share all the fantastic things to do at Animal Kingdom. From thrill rides to backstage animal experiences, you can fill multiple days at this park.

Animal Kingdom is near to my heart after working at the Walt Disney World park for 7 years. That is why I can confidently share the best things to do.

Here are all the attractions you should consider adding to your Animal Kingdom itinerary!

Best Things to Do at Animal Kingdom

Wild Africa Trek

Head out on a 3-hour safari with a personal guide and a high ropes adventure.

Wild Africa Trek bridges over hippo and crocodile habitats
The Wild Africa Trek bridges take guests over the hippo and crocodile habitats.

📍 Google Maps | Phone: (407) 938-1373 | Website | Cost: $219-$229 per person

If there is one experience that will take your day at Animal Kingdom to the next level, it’s Wild Africa Trek. This small group tour includes an up-close experience with hippos and crocodiles, a personalized safari, and snacks at a platform in the center of the savanna.

👉 Local Tip: I recommend taking one of the morning tours for the best experience. The temperature is cooler, and the animals tend to be more active.

Avatar Flight of Passage

This unique attraction takes you into the world of Avatar as you fly through Pandora on the back of a banshee.

The land and plants at Pandora's World, home to the thrilling Avatar Flight of Passage ride
The land around Flight of Passage is intricately detailed.

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

Since it opened, Avatar Flight of Passage has been one of the top rides at Walt Disney World. The ride is a mix of Soarin’ and Tron as guests sit on their own flying banshee to soar over beautiful views of Pandora.

The line for Flight of Passage is typically the longest in the park. Therefore, I recommend going here first thing in the morning (“rope-dropping”) or purchasing a Lightning Lane Single Pass.

Wilderness Explorers

Kids (of all ages) can learn and explore while collecting their Wilderness Explorers badges.

Wilderness Explorer activities are throughout the park, like this stand in Dinoland, USA

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

Fans of the movie Up are well aware of the Wilderness Explorers. To become a real-life Wilderness Explorer, kids (and adults) can complete educational activities throughout Animal Kingdom.

A booklet will help young explorers keep track of their badges and activities. Look for cast members with the signature orange neck scarf to get started.

Expedition Everest

Hop on Animal Kingdom’s only rollercoaster in search of the elusive yeti.

Riders hit 50 miles per hour as they shoot out of the forbidden mountain!

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

When people reference the Disney mountains, they are usually referencing the Magic Kingdom rides. However, Expedition Everest has more than earned its honorary status as a Disney mountain.

This is the best ride for thrill-seekers at Animal Kingdom. In addition to the large drop, there is also a portion of the ride that goes backward!

Tree of Life

Animal Kingdom’s iconic tree is impressive, but there is even more than meets the eye.

There are over 300 animals carved into the tree. You’ll need to look closer to find them all

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

Many people don’t realize that you can get up close to the Tree of Life. Actually, I encourage it! The tree’s trunk and roots are carved with hundreds of animals, including bugs, dinosaurs, and more.

The Discovery Island Trails will lead you around the animal habitats and tree carvings.

Winged Encounters

Watch in awe as free-flying macaws circle the Tree of Life.

The free-flight macaws take off in groups to head home after their show.

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

One of my favorite things about Animal Kingdom is the magical experiences that can be found throughout the park (and, most importantly, without waiting in line). Winged Encounters is one of the best animal viewing experiences at the park.

Free-flight macaws fly from their behind-the-scenes habitat to the front of the Tree of Life. Their care team tells guests about the birds and their training. Then the macaws get to show off again and fly back to their home.

Best Food & Drinks at Animal Kingdom

Tiffins Restaurant

Enjoy an elevated dining experience with dishes inspired by international cuisines.

Entrance to the Tiffins Restaurant serving delectable cuisine in a stylish ambiance
Tiffins is next to the Pandora Bridge on Discovery Island.

📍 Google Maps | Website

Tiffins Restaurant is the best dining experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The decor and cuisine take inspiration from around the world. Some of the decor is also inspired by notes and sketches from the Imagineers who designed Animal Kingdom.

Surprisingly, it is fairly easy to snag a dining reservation at Tiffins. With the excellent quality and diversity of food, you should consider this restaurant as a signature dining experience during your Disney vacation.

Savor the Savanna

There is nothing better than a happy hour overlooking the African savanna.

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: $189-$199 per person

Savor the Savanna is an upscale version of Wild Africa Trek. This experience starts with a personal safari with a guide to answer all your questions. From there, guests head to the boma in the middle of the savanna for African snacks, beer, and wine.

This is a unique addition to a Disney date night or even a Disney World honeymoon. The time of Savor the Savanna varies but is typically in mid-afternoon. After a savanna “happy hour,” you can head to your favorite restaurant for dinner.

Spiked Dole Whip

Head to Tamu Tamu Refreshments to enjoy an adult spin on this Disney World classic snack.

I am a huge fan of the spiked Dole Whip floats!

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: $12-15

Walt Disney World is known for its snack offerings. A spiked Dole Whip is one of my favorites because it is a classic Disney treat with an adult twist.

You can choose to enjoy a pineapple cider float or top your creamy dessert with rum. Either way, you’re in for a delicious treat.

Satu’li Canteen

The food at Satu’li Canteen is far elevated from the mess hall ambiance.

My order at Satu’li Canteen is always the wood-grilled chicken bowl

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: $13-$19/entree

If you are trying to eat healthy on your Walt Disney World vacation, I recommend grabbing some food from Satu’li Canteen. This restaurant is also a great option for those with allergies or dietary restrictions.

Many of the meals are build-your-own bowls where you can choose your protein, side, and sauce. There are several delicious combinations to choose from, including chicken, beef, shrimp, and more.

Tusker House

Hang out with your favorite safari characters while dining on an African-inspired buffet.

To feel like an authentic African village, Tusker House is tucked away with one small sign

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: $49-$64 adults, $33-$42 children

Tusker House is one of the best Disney table-service restaurants in terms of bang for your buck. This restaurant is both a buffet and character dining. You’ll be able to meet Donald Duck and his friends while enjoying African-inspired dishes.

👉 Local Tip: I recommend getting an early morning breakfast reservation at Tusker House. If the park isn’t open yet, you’ll be some of the first guests in and be able to get some fantastic photos.

Flame Tree Barbecue

Dine on finger-licking good food while enjoying views of the water and Expedition Everest.

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: $12-$19/entree

Flame Tree Barbecue is one of my favorite Disney restaurants for the ambiance. The waterfront seating is calm and tucked away from the busy walkways. You also have a fantastic view of the water and Expedition Everest.

The barbecue is delicious and the portions are good sizes. My husband and I can easily share one plate and be satisfied.

Nomad Lounge

Dine on international flavors in an elegant but relaxed setting.

A cozy outdoor space with wooden deck, wicker chairs, and a table for relaxing at Nomad Lounge
I recommend the outdoor seating at Nomad Lounge

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: $10-$18 small plates, $15-$23 cocktails

Nomad Lounge is the perfect complement to Tiffin’s next door. Where Tiffins is a more high-end dining experience, Nomad Lounge offers similar international cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere.

I love grabbing a drink and appetizers while sitting on the outdoor deck. The deck overlooks the water, and you can hear the sounds of Pandora over the bridge. You might even see your favorite character float by!

Harambe Market

While dining in open-air seating, delight in African-inspired dishes.

The chicken rice bowl has been my favorite meal at Animal Kingdom recently

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost:$10-$16 entrees

Those looking for a relaxed, open-air dining option should head over to Harambe Market. The smell of delicious African flavors is easy to follow.

While you dine, you may be lucky enough to have one of the rotating musicians walk through. Kids also love to watch the Wildlife Express Train pass by every few minutes.

Best Animal Activities at Animal Kingdom

Up Close with Rhinos Tour

Head backstage to meet Disney’s crash of white rhinos face to face.

📍 Google Maps | Phone: (407) 938-1373 | Website | Cost: $49 per person

If you love seeing the white rhinos wandering the savanna on Kilimanjaro Safaris, this is the perfect tour for you. You can speak with animal keepers and learn about the rhinos’ personalities, preferences, and daily habits.

Additionally, you will head to the white rhino barn and potentially meet one of the members of the herd. The rhinos do not have to participate if they don’t want to. But, I have heard that, more often than not, they do.

Animal Walking Trails

Step away from the main path to see what creatures you can discover throughout the park.

This beautiful Nicobar pigeon lives in the aviary at the Maharajah Jungle Trek

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

When creating Animal Kingdom, the Imagineers wanted guests to feel the surprise and wonder of stumbling upon an animal. They achieved this by including four walking trails for visitors to explore:

  • Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail (Africa)
  • Maharajah Jungle Trek (Asia)
  • Oasis Exhibits (park entrance)
  • Discovery Island Trails (Discovery Island)

The Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail and Maharajah Jungle Trek are one-directional trails that will take you past all the animals. The Discovery Island Trails and Oasis Exhibits are more spread out for the feeling of true exploration.

🛎️ Need a Hotel? If the animals are the best part of Animal Kingdom for you, I recommend staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge for your Disney vacation. A savanna-view room gives you the ability to see African animals day and night from your balcony.

Kilimanjaro Safaris

Don’t miss out on this 20+ minute safari through several African ecosystems.

Giraffes are just one of the many animals you can spot on your safari

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

When people think of Animal Kingdom, Kilimanjaro Safaris is typically the first attraction that comes to mind. This 20+ minute trip throughout several African habitats allows guests to see rhinos, giraffes, elephants, and more.

The best time to ride Kilimanjaro Safaris is in the morning when the animals tend to be most active. The second-best time to ride is during a storm when many animals show off playful behaviors.

Kilimanjaro Safaris even made my list of top Disney World attractions!

Conservation Station

Chat with the animal care team and get up close with the animals at the petting zoo.

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

From Africa, guests can take the Wildlife Express Train out to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. This area is home to the Conservation Station, the Animation Experience, and the Affection Section.

You can wander through small animal exhibits and see how Disney’s Animal Kingdom team cares for big and small animals. My son always makes a stop at the Affection Section, a petting zoo, to love the goats and sheep.

Caring for Giants

Learn behind-the-scenes secrets about what it takes to care for the largest creatures at Disney World.

Guests pass by Tembo (elephant in Swahili) House on their way to the elephant habitat overlook

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: $39 per person

The elephants are only visible for a couple of minutes during Kilimanjaro Safaris, so book Caring for Giants if you want a better look. Guests are taken to an overlook behind the elephant habitat for an unmatched view of the gentle giants.

An expert educates guests about what it takes to care for a herd of elephants at Disney World. Additionally, they share fun tidbits about each elephant’s personality and quirks.

Feathered Friends in Flight!

Learn more about different bird species and their training at this comical show.

Entrance of the Feathered Friends in Flight
The open-air theater can be found in the Asia section of the park.

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included in park admission

Feathered Friends in Flight! is a fantastic show that combines comedy, education, and animal encounters. Guests see a variety of bird species and learn more about their training.

The hosts include audience members in several demonstrations, so sit closer to the front if you’d like to be chosen to participate.

Play Disney Parks – Animal Expeditions

Use the Play Disney Parks app to guide you along your park explorations.

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Free

The Play Disney Parks app includes several games and interactive experiences that you can play at home or in the parks. For several of the experiences, you must be inside the theme park to access them.

There are currently four experiences for Animal Kingdom:

  • Animal Expeditions: Tree of Life
  • ACE Guide to Pandora
  • Animal Expeditions: Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail
  • Animal Expeditions: Maharajah Jungle Trek

Best Shows & Attractions at Animal Kingdom

Festival of the Lion King

Join Simba and friends for a colorful, musical show featuring dancers, singers, and acrobats.

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

Festival of the Lion King is a classic show that has been running since Animal Kingdom opened. Dancers, singers, and acrobats help the Lion King characters share their stories through music.

Shows can fill up 30-40 minutes before the start on busy days. I recommend seeing one of the morning shows or getting to the entrance well in advance.

Animation Experience

Bring your art skills to the park while learning how to draw a beloved Disney character.

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

Many guests miss the old Animation Experience at Hollywood Studios. Luckily, the same expert artists are offering drawing lessons inside the Conservation Station at Animal Kingdom.

The characters rotate from day to day, so you can have the opportunity to draw a new character each time. Drawing boards, paper, and pencils are provided.

The Boneyard

Parents, take a break while your kids run through the playground and dig for fossils.

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

All parents of young kids should add a stop at The Boneyard to their Animal Kingdom itinerary. This area is a huge playground with climbing structures, slides, fossils, and tunnels to explore.

If you cross over the big fossil bridge, you’ll find a dig site with all the tools your little ones will need to excavate huge dinosaur fossils.

👉 Author’s Note: The Boneyard will be closing permanently on September 2, 2025. Construction has started for the new Tropical Americas land, replacing Dinoland. Disney has confirmed that there will be a new play area in the new land.

DINOSAUR

Head back to prehistoric times on this thrilling dark ride before it’s gone.

A dinosaur skeleton specifically the Carnotaurus on display at the Animal Kingdom.
The queue for DINOSAUR is equal parts educational and entertaining

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included in park admission

Disney has announced that the Dinosaur attraction will be re-themed to Indiana Jones, and it will be closing sometime in 2026. Therefore, you must include Dinosaur on the itinerary for your 2025 visit to Animal Kingdom while you have the chance.

Hop into an all-terrain vehicle and jump back in time to help scientists retrieve a dinosaur for science. You are guaranteed to scream, smile, and hold on tight!

Kali River Rapids

The best way to cool off on a hot day is with a splash on this water ride.

A group of people enjoying the Kali River Rapids
The ride isn’t too long, but you are guaranteed to get wet!

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

As water rides go, Kali River Rapids is short, sweet, and to the point. You are guaranteed to get wet, so it is the perfect way to cool off during a hot Florida summer.

Outside of summer, the lines for this attraction are usually fairly reasonable. If you don’t mind getting wet or choose to wear a poncho, you can enjoy a fun ride without waiting too long.

Check out the Best Time to Visit Disney World for more advice on finding the best weather and the shortest wait times.

Relax on a boat ride through the vibrant world of Avatar.

This Na’vi Shaman is rumored to be the most expensive animatronic at Walt Disney World

📍 Google Maps | Website | Cost: Included with park admission

I hesitate to include Na’vi River Journey on this list because the wait time is usually very long. This ride is phenomenal. The decor, sounds, and experience are completely immersive and beautifully done. Babies and young kids seem to be mesmerized by all the things they see.

However, the ride is pretty short compared to the long wait times that it often carries. Therefore, I recommend hopping on first thing in the morning or right before the park closes when the line is the shortest.
