The default order of results is by “recommended” car. But you can also use tabs to sort by price or distance. from a certain location. I haven’t always found the recommendations to meet my needs. However, applying my own filters has led to great results on this site.
Kayak is a site with a smaller selection of Paris rental cars than Discover Cars or RentalCars.com. However, it still provides a comprehensive selection. My favorite part of this site is the price predictor. This feature tells you whether you should book your car right now or wait for prices to drop.

Rental Car Requirements for Paris
🚘 Driving Age – You must be 18 to drive in France at all. Renting a car generally requires older drivers. Many companies only accept drivers over 21, while others set a minimum age of 25. You can enter your age on Discover Cars to narrow results.
🌎 License Requirements – Americans can use their license in Paris for up to 90 days. Policies vary depending on which country issued your license, so check the French embassy’s website in your country.
📅 License Policies – Most rental companies in Paris require drivers to have held their licenses for a minimum period. This can be one or even three years. Verify policies with your company before booking.
🚗 Car Insurance – The quoted car rental price will include unlimited third-party liability insurance. This is the minimum insurance the government requires drivers to have. You will need proof of insurance in the car at all times, so check with your rental company to ensure you have it before departing.
🔧 Additional Insurance – Additional insurance coverage for roadside assistance, theft, and medical expenses can be useful. Some credit cards and homeowner policies provide this, but always check in advance. You can also check VisitorsCoverage.com to compare policies and prices.
💳 Payment – Car rentals that you can pay for in cash are very hard to find. Plan on using a credit or debit card to rent a car in Paris. Even if a rental agency does not require a deposit or prepayment, they generally only accept cards.

11 Tips & Things to Know Before Renting in Paris
Tip #1 – Read Conditions Carefully

International drivers renting cars in France are often surprised by bills for fees after their rental has ended. For example, one driver was charged with unknown speeding ticket fees, according to the New York Times. Realize that you can be liable for tickets under certain circumstances. Review your rental agreements to understand potential charges.
Tip #2 – Budget for Gas

Gas in Paris may not seem expensive, until you realize it’s sold in liters, rather than gallons. As of mid-2025, the average price for French gas is $7.19 a gallon [Source]. Incorporate this into your budget when planning to drive in Paris.
Tip #3 – Plan for All Expenses
Renting a car may seem like the cheapest option for your trip at first. However, take into account factors like deposits, insurance, gas, and transport to and from agencies. After adding everything up, other ways of getting around Paris or France may be cheaper.
Tip #4 – Plan Parking in Advance

Parisian parking is legendarily tough. However, you can find parking close to your accommodations in Paris ahead of time using sites like Paris, France Parking. Look for an underground lot with good lighting and 24/7 availability. I do not recommend parking on the street in Paris.
Tip #5 – Go Outside the City if Possible
Paris car rental prices are generally much higher than car rental prices outside the city. Furthermore, you’ll likely have to drive through lots of traffic before leaving the city.
Think broadly if you’re getting a car for day trips or longer journeys outside of Paris. Consider renting in outlying Paris neighborhoods like the 16th arrondissement. A close suburb like Neuilly-Sur-Seine is also a good choice. These areas are accessible via public transportation and convenient for leaving the city.
Tip #6 – Avoid Street Parking if Possible

Vandalism and petty damage to cars are common in Paris. Parking on the street increases your chances of encountering these situations. Paris street parking is also metered and subject to strict time limits.
Make renting a car in Paris easier by arranging your parking in an underground garage. This is easier than planning on finding street parking near your destination. It may be slightly more expensive, but the safety and peace of mind is worth it.

Tip #7 – Never Leave Valuables in the Car
Paris is a big city with its share of burglaries. Take valuables into your hotel with you, or leave them at home before traveling. Cars with locks will not prevent thieves from breaking in to get a wallet or phone. Instead, you’re more likely to end up with a shattered window as well as missing items.
Tip #8 – Get an International Permit

You will either need to get a notarized translation within 90 days or an international driving permit if your driver’s license isn’t in French. You can get international permits online cheaply and quickly, so this is generally the easier option.
Many rental companies will not require this to book a car. But you will need one when picking it up or if you are pulled over on the road. This is especially important if you are involved in an accident.
Tip #9 – Know the Road Rules
Driving in Paris may seem like driving in any other big city. However, Paris has particular rules and regulations you should know about ahead of time.
For example, the speed limit in Paris is generally 30 km/hr (18.6 mph), with a few exceptions. This can slow down travel times. When it doesn’t, accidental speeding can easily lead to tickets. Similarly, you are not allowed to honk your horn within city limits except in case of imminent danger.
Tip #10 – Keep an Eye on Transmission and AC Options

The default for French rental cars is a manual transmission. Automatics are available, but they generally cost more. On rental sites, you usually need to filter results for them specifically.
Air conditioning is also not standard on older French cars. Newer cars generally have it, but check options on rental sites to ensure your car does if this is important to you.
Tip #11 – Prepare for Aggressive Driving
Paris has its fair share of aggressive drivers who break the speed limit and honk, despite strict road rules. You will encounter cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists who weave in and out of traffic. You may feel pressure to drive similarly, but realize that the police will not hesitate to make an example out of you.

Hi! Thanks for the valuable information! I’m wondering if it’s more cost effective to rent a car in Paris city to drive to the Loire Valley vs. renting at the airport. We won’t need a car while in the city but will use it to drive to Loire. Will we incur additional taxes or costs at the airport vs renting in or near the city?
Hi Julie! Great question. I ran a few price comparisons on RentalCars.com for Paris city center vs. Charles de Gaulle. Very generally, I’m seeing that Paris city center rentals are cheaper–at the lower end, by around 125 euros. However, this isn’t because of any particular fees or taxes, but rather because driving in Paris is such a hassle and less popular here than driving from the airport, so the prices are accordingly slightly lower. You’ll likely pay a lot for parking, as well as experiencing the stress of city driving when you don’t need to. One compromise would be to rent a car from an agency at the outer edge of Paris, such as in the 16th.
Hello. We’ll be arriving at Gare du Nord from London. To avoid driving out of central Paris, I was considering a transfer to Orly Airport to pick up our Sixt rental car to travel to the Loire Valley (Tours) and then to Normandy (Caen). We would return the car in Caen and take the train back to the Saint Lazare station for four days in Paris. Does this plan seem reasonable? Any other suggestions? Thank you.
Hi Josh–good question. By a transfer, do you mean by a taxi or by public transportation? Either way, you’ll want to weigh the cost/benefits against driving out of Paris yourself. The hassles of driving in Paris are considerable, but a taxi to Orly will take about an hour (more in rush hour) and the Métro will involve at least one change, so it’s not a great choice if you have a lot of luggage. If you’re planning to taxi to Orly, definitely book in advance: it may be hard to find a taxi in the queue at the Gare du Nord willing to go that far without notice.
Either way, it’s certainly a reasonable plan–just make sure to take those factors into consideration. Have a great trip!
I fly into Paris on a Wednesday and will be there for a few days there before spending a week in wine country. Can I rent a car easily in the city? Seems like a better idea than renting a car at the airport and parking it in the city for 3 days.
Hi Scott–Yes, you’ll find plenty of car rental agencies in Paris itself. There are lots of selections at the train stations, in particular, and even a Hertz location in the shopping mall beneath the Louvre (the Carrousel du Louvre). Depending on where you depart from within the city, you may find traffic tricky on the way out, so an agency on the outer edges of the city may be better. Have a great trip!
We are travelling on the Eurostar next week and driving from Paris to euro camp in Berny-Rivière, about an hour from Paris. We would like to hire a car for the week for day trips etc.
We were thinking of getting a train from Garde de Nord to the Airport to collect a car.
Is this a good idea and if so should we book it in advance?
Thanks
Andrew
Hi Andrew,
That is a great plan. As you’ve probably realized, driving from the Gare du Nord would put you right in the center of a very busy traffic area, and this time of year can be wild! You can take the RER B to Charles de Gaulle Airport easily from the station. Once you’re at the airport, you can find a variety of car rental companies by terminal: the airport website has a list here.
I would absolutely recommend booking in advance at this time of year, as many Parisians are traveling–and, of course, many travelers are coming in and out of Paris! While the airport companies are usually well-stocked, booking in advance makes it more likely that you’ll get the exact type of car you’re looking for.
I hope that helps, and have a wonderful trip!
Best,
Rachel
Wonderful. Thanks so much Rachel!
We ( 4 of us ) are going to Paris in January 2025 staying near Disneyland. For a week. Is it better to rent a car or take transit?
Hi Tom, it depends on where you’re staying in relation to transit. If you’re close to an RER (commuter train) stop, you don’t need a car. If you’re only planning on going into Paris a few times, you likely won’t need a car, but you will need to find other options (like long-distance taxis/car services or renting a car to take to the nearest train station) to get you into the city. Generally, driving in Paris is very slow, with many impatient drivers, narrow streets, and difficult on-street parking; I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’ve drive in similar cities/France a lot. Good luck, and have a wonderful trip!
Is it better to rent electrical or petrol car if I need to go out of Paris to the south
Hi Sami–it’s better to rent a car that runs on petrol if you’re going to the south, particularly as you’ll be driving through rural areas to get there, where charging stations aren’t always guaranteed. Happy travels!
