Art production company Meow Wolf is known for creating immersive dreamscapes. And it recently announced Los Angeles as the home of its sixth permanent art exhibition, which will open in 2026.

Longtime Travel Lemming readers in Denver, Santa Fe, and Las Vegas already know Meow Wolf as one of our publication’s top recommended things to do in those cities.

But, for Los Angeles readers, Meow Wolf may require an introduction.

The only problem? Well, honestly it’s sometimes a struggle to even explain what Meow Wolf is – but we’ll try nonetheless.

Like its latest chosen city, Meow Wolf is ever-evolving and boldly creative. Vibrant and interactive, its attractions blend concepts seen in selfie museums, fun houses, and projected digital art installations.

But Meow Wolf infuses its own distinct flair, along with Easter eggs and interconnecting storylines that keep even super fans guessing.

As the company puts it, its exhibitions are “hard to explain but easy to enjoy.”

The theme of the upcoming attraction has yet to be revealed but like its other locations, an “unpredictable tapestry of art, story, and interactivity” can be expected.

“L.A. is more than a physical place; it extends deep into the global landscape of human imagination, constantly pushing its own bounds,” commented Meow Wolf co-founder Sean Di Ianni.

How Meow Wolf Became A Renowned Attraction

Back in 2008, a small group of artists — Di Ianni, Matt King, Corvas Brinkerhoff, Emily Montoya, Caity Kennedy, Benji Geary, and Vince Kadlubek — came together in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Kadlubek states in the documentary Meow Wolf: Origin Story that their collective felt that “they were on the outside of the art market in Santa Fe, looking in.”

Di Ianni affirms that at the time, “The scene for artists who were trying to do something different or weird just didn’t exist.”

But without proof of an interested audience, securing funding was a challenge. But famed novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin saw potential in the innovative concept.

In 2016, the first permanent Meow Wolf exhibition, titled House of Eternal Return, opened in a former Santa Fe bowling alley.

Past a mysterious refrigerator door, guests encounter more hidden passages into different dimensions. From vibrant sights to otherworldly sounds, the full-sensory experience mesmerizes visitors in a never-before-seen way.

Given its viral success, Meow Wolf has since launched permanent exhibitions across the country — each created in partnership with hundreds of local artists.

Denver’s Convergence Station, which transports guests to connecting intergalactic worlds, opened in 2021. That same year, Omega Mart debuted in Las Vegas, delighting visitors with a not-so-typical trip to the grocery store.

Then, in 2023, Meow Wolf expanded to Grapevine, Texas and launched The Real Unreal which tells the story of an ordinary family’s remarkable journey through time and space.

Another permanent exhibit is set to open in Houston in 2024, with the new Los Angeles attraction to follow.
