I’m a Puerto Rico local who has the inside scoop on where to stay in Vieques.

If it’s your first time here, I recommend staying in the La Esperanza neighborhood so you’re close to the best Vieques sites. In particular, I think The Vieques Guesthouse is the #1 accommodation in the area, as it balances location and amenities, followed by El Blok.

Of course, there are plenty of places to stay in Vieques for your travel style. Vieques offers great attractions all around the island, but whether you stay in the north or the south will have unique pros and cons.

In this article, I’ll give you a rundown of the best neighborhoods in Vieques. But first, let’s look at a list of the best hotels:

Vieques features 8 big neighborhoods divided into smaller areas often called sectores.

You’ll find many accommodation options in Vieques, from beachfront hotels to small apartment rentals in the island’s hills. The best choice will depend on what you’re looking for during your trip.

Let’s look at 5 of the best places to stay in Vieques, Puerto Rico.

Isabel II & Sector Barrancón

👉 Best Area For Walking and Shopping | Best Isabel II & Sector Barrancón Hotels: Casa Amistad Guesthouse Casa MoralesOld Crow Hotel and Suites

Isabel II is the neighborhood where the ferry from the mainland docks at Vieques. Known also as Vieques Pueblo, Isabel II features restaurants, supermarkets, banks, car rentals, and souvenir shops.

This town center is walkable and is often lively. You’ll find both tourists and locals here. For the best stay, I recommend Casa Amistad Guesthouse. It’s close to a bunch of major attractions and has a pool.

It’s also right next to Sea Glass Beach, one of the best attractions in Vieques. An alternative is Casa Morales, a small townhouse with three rooms ideal for staying in town with your family. It also has parking, which is hard to come by in Vieques.

Also in downtown, Casa Sol offers a comfortable stay for larger groups, with four rooms, two bathrooms, and an outdoor pool. It’s also within walking distance of the ferry and some of the best restaurants in town.

Overall, this neighborhood is perfect for visitors who want to stay close to all the facilities, the ferry terminal, and the beach.

But, if you’d like to stay nearby all without the crowds of downtown, stay in Sector Barrancón in the neighborhood of Florida, where you’ll find Old Crow Hotel and Suites, one of the best hotels in Vieques.

Pros of Staying in Isabel II & Sector Barrancón:

  • Beaches within walking distance
  • Supermarkets, shops, and restaurants are accessible
  • Close to the ferry terminal

Cons of Staying in Isabel II & Sector Barrancón:

  • Far from Vieques’s most popular beaches
  • Traffic

Puerto Diablo

👉 Best Area For Families | Best Puerto Diablo Hotels: Bravo Beach Hotel • Casa Paradise PalmsCasa Mariposa

Puerto Diablo is a nearby neighborhood to Isabel II, with multiple sub-barrios known as sectores.

Within the Puerto Diablo neighborhood, you get to pick between coastal hotels and apartment rentals, and lodges in the mountainous interior of Vieques.

Best of all, you can find some cheap hotels and apartment rentals here.

Bravo Beach Hotel is the most popular hotel in the area, perfect for families, and business travelers, with direct access to the beach.

This area is great to stay for its central location close to the terminal and a few minutes away from the airport.

Further to the island’s interior, Casa Paradise Palms, offers a comfortable countryside stay for up to 8 people. Its outdoor dining deck with a view of the coast is definitely its highlight.

Check out Casa Mariposa in Villa Borinquen for a luxurious lodge option in the neighborhood. The rooftop patio offers a great spot to watch the sunsets.

Pros of Staying in Puerto Diablo:

  • Close to downtown
  • Supermarkets, shops, and restaurants are accessible
  • Family-friendly hotels and apartment rentals
  • Both coastal and countryside lodge offer

Cons of Staying in Puerto Diablo:

  • Far from Vieques’s popular beaches
  • Limited hotel offer

La Esperanza

👉 Best Area For Sightseeing | Best La Esperanza Hotels: El BlokThe Vieques GuesthouseBlue Horizon Boutique Resort

La Esperanza is a sector of Puerto Real, and a popular area to stay because of its vibrant nightlife and prime beachfront location.

Also known as El Malecón, La Esperanza has bars, restaurants, and popular hotels on the island, including El Blok, a beachfront adult-only hotel with architecture inspired by coral reefs and the ocean.

Esperanza Inn Guesthouse and The Vieques Guesthouse are two popular guesthouses in this sector, both with family rooms, wifi, and free parking. The Vieques Guesthouse also offers breakfast and has a restaurant on-site.

But, if you’re looking for something more luxurious, close enough to enjoy this buzzing part of Vieques, but far enough to take a break when you want to, Blue Horizon Boutique Resort is your best option.

La Esperanza is near the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, where you can find the top beaches of Vieques, like Playa Caracas and Playa La Chiva.

It’s also close to Mosquito Bio Bay, one of the three Puerto Rico biobays.

Pros of Staying in La Esperanza:

Cons of Staying in La Esperanza:

  • Far from the ferry port
  • Hotels and restaurants can be pricey

Sector Puerto Real

👉 Best Area To Relax | Best Puerto Real Hotels: Finca VictoriaLejos Eco Retreat Hix Island House

Puerto Real is a bigger neighborhood that extends from the south coast to the interior of Vieques. For people wanting to stay off the touristy coast, staying in the mountainous side of Puerto Real is a great solution.

Most hotels include breathtaking views of the coast, plus you’ll enjoy a more relaxing vibe than the hotels on the coast.

In this part of the island, Finca Victoria is particularly unique, surrounded by vegetation and ideal for stargazing. You can choose between staying at cabins, treehouses or casona-style houses scattered through the estate.

Similarly, Hix Island House offers a sustainable getaway in the countryside with a minimalist and unique architecture.

Vacation rentals in the island’s interior also tend to focus on connecting with nature and relaxing, like the Lejos Eco Retreat, but you’ll also find family-friendly villas like Quinta Jaracanda. Best thing yet, some of them are cheaper than those on the coast.

Pros of Staying in Puerto Real:

  • Variety of hotels to choose from
  • Uncrowded area

Cons of Staying in Puerto Real:

  • Possible insects and other animals in facilities
  • Beaches aren’t within walking distance

Puerto Ferro

👉 Best Area for Cheap Apartment Rentals | Best Sector Destino And Colonia Luján Hotels: Isla Hermosa Guesthouse Solimar VerdeCasa Colibrí

Like Puerto Real, the Puerto Ferro neighborhood covers part of Vieques’ south coast and countryside. But, unlike Puerto Real, Puerto Ferro is partially covered by the Vieques Wildlife Refuge, which means the neighborhood’s lodge options are limited.

But, when it comes to staying on a budget, this is one of the best places to stay in Vieques. In here, Sector Destino and Colonia Luján, two sectors, offer some of the cheapest rentals on Vieques with an average nightly price below $175. Solimar Verde and Amarilla Casita are two examples.

Of course, you’ll find more pricey and luxurious villas like Casa de Colores and Casa Colibrí, both big enough to fit an entire family.

However, you’ll likely need to rent a car to move to and from these sectors to other areas of Vieques.

Pros of Staying in Puerto Ferro:

  • Far from the buzz of the coast
  • Relaxing ambiance
  • Cheap rentals

Cons of Staying in Puerto Ferro:

  • Possible insects and other animals in facilities
  • Beaches aren’t within walkable distance

Tips for Staying in Vieques

View of the blue water and clear blue sky from Vieques

Try a Vieques Vacation Rental

There are plenty of vacation rentals in Vieques Island that you can try out for your stay.

Although prices vary, you can usually find vacation rentals for a cheaper price the night than most Vieques hotels. A vacation rental will also allow you to cook your own meals, and save money.

👉 Search Vieques vacation rentals on VRBO here.

Look for the Extras

Bravo Beach Hotel rooms come with free parking and wifi

If you would rather stay in a hotel, try to look for those that include the extra amenities and features in the price per night, like a full breakfast, beach chairs, free wifi, free parking, outdoor showers, or air conditioning. That way you’ll be paying your money’s worth.

Consider Your Transportation Around Vieques

A door at the Villa Dos Palmas

If you’re visiting Vieques but don’t want to rent a car in Puerto Rico, consider a hotel or a vacation rental close to a beach or Vieques attractions.

You can also check if your hotel is one of the pickup spots for tours, so you can move around conveniently.

Also note that if you rent a car on the main island to drive in Puerto Rico, you can’t take it on the ferry from Ceiba to Vieques. Currently, only residents are allowed to bring their cars on the ferry.

See my guide on getting to Vieques from San Juan for more tips on how to plan your transportation to Vieques.

Plan for Where You Will Eat

Depending on where you are staying in Vieques, you might not have nearby restaurants to eat at.

Unless you’re booking a rental apartment with a kitchen, try to pick a hotel that has restaurants nearby. This will come in handy so you don’t have to drive to the opposite side of the island to eat.

For example, at La Esperanza, you will find a variety of hotels and lodges next to some of the best restaurants on the island.

Try Staying in the Center of the Island

Aerial view of an area in Puerto Rico
Choose between the coast and the mountainous interior

If, rather than being close to Vieques beaches, you want to enjoy some countryside peace, then look for a hotel or apartment rental in Vieques’ interior, far from the coastal buzz.

Finca Victoria, Hacienda Tamarindo, and Hix Island House are three alternatives you can choose from instead of the beachfront hotels, and, as Vieques is safe, you don’t have to worry about staying in the countryside.

Check if Your Accommodation is Adult Only

Some hotels in Vieques are adult-only hotels, meaning you can’t choose them to spend your family vacation in Vieques.

If you’re traveling with kids, check that your hotel in Vieques is kid-friendly to avoid last-minute cancellations and bookings.

Locations like the El Blok, Blue Horizon Boutique Resort, and Casa de Amistad are adult-only hotels, while Bravo Beach Hotel is family-friendly.
