Hi !
When is the best time of the year to have the best bioluminescent ? The Best month !
Thank you !
There isn’t a single best month to see the bioluminescent bay—it glows year-round. However, several factors can affect the brightness, including strong currents, tides, and heavy rain, many of which are hard to predict. To improve your chances of a great experience, I recommend visiting during the dry season (December to April), when there’s less chance of rain. Also, try to go on a night with a new moon for the best visibility.
Hello, I was wondering if there is any possibility of taking a boat from San Juan to Culebra? Possibly part of a 6 hours tour that would let us depart the boat in Culebra instead of San Juan.
Hi Kris! There aren’t any boats from San Juan to Culebra. Most boat tours to Culebra depart from Fajardo, a city located on the East Coast. You can take a shuttle or a taxi from San Juan to Fajardo. Another alternative is to take a flight from San Juan to Culebra. Multiple tours depart from Culebra to the nearby cays like Culebrita, so you can opt for flying directly into the island and taking a boat tour there too.
Hello
We are planning to visit PR in May 4 days 3 nights and visit bio bay in Vieques for a day. I’ve read some reviews on bio bay. Do you know can we still visit bio bay and see Noctiluca scintillans?
Any recommendations?
Thank you.
Hi Stella! It all depends on the dates you’re visiting. This year the new moon is on May 8, which is the best day to appreciate the bioluminescent bay. But, if you’re not on Vieques on that date, then any day between May 4 and 13 works. The less light there is, the better you can see the glow. Anything after the 13 could be too much light. Although kayaking is the most common tour, I’d recommend a boat tour. You aren’t worried about tipping over your kayak, and the boat moves around the bay looking for the best spots to see the glow. Book in advance.
Is it possible to end a day visit in Vieques by seeing the bio-bay after dark and still catch a ferry back to PR without having to spend the night?
Thanks for the info! I will be following links! Questions: 1. Could you potentially rent a golf cart instead of a car on Vieques? 2. Are there ridesharing services (like Lyft and Uber) on Vieques and/or San Juan you could use to get from San Juan to the ferry and around in the island once you reach Vieques?
You can rent golf carts, but the best beaches are better reached by car. That said, lots of people use the golf carts – just ask for one with the bigger tires. I don’t think there is lyft or uber on the island, but there are a lot of local cabs you can call – be prepared to pay cash.
