Puerto Rico is home to three bioluminescent bays and you can find one of them in Fajardo. Laguna Grande Bioluminescent Bay, as it’s known, is one of the unique things to do in Fajardo.

At the Kayak Village, you’ll find numerous companies and tour operators that offer kayaking tours and will take you through the narrow and long canal to the bioluminescent bay.

Just make sure to book your tour during a night with a new moon to better appreciate the glow! I personally prefer the boat tour, especially if you’re interested in taking pictures.

I already said you should visit the lighthouse but you absolutely need to explore the rest of this lovely green space if you’re a nature lover.

Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve is home to Laguna Grande Bio Bay, mangroves, coral reefs, a dry forest, and beaches. There are even records of whale sightings here.

It has multiple hiking trails worth exploring, and best of all, after enjoying the Caribbean heat, you get to refresh yourself on the beaches of this nature reserve.

Para La Naturaleza offers tours through the reserve starting at $12.

👉 Local Tip: Although you can explore the reserve without a tour or a previous reservation, occasionally, the guard at the gate won’t let you through. Don’t fret! In this case, just follow the coast east until you find access to the reserve through the beach.

Tour the cacao fields and harvest cacao while you enjoy unique views of El Yunque National Forest. Get a taste of the cacao and enjoy a hot chocolate made with the site’s fresh fruit. Depending on the tour, you can also enjoy a wine tasting or a sip and paint.

You can only visit with a previous reservation.

Marina Puerto del Rey is the Caribbean’s largest marina, and it’s worth a stop when you’re in Fajardo. Bringing in boats from all over the world, this spot is one of two Blue Flag marinas in Puerto Rico and is naturally protected from strong tides and storms.

While you’re here, be sure to stop in at some of the restaurants and bars nearby. Or, hop on a snorkeling tour and see what’s going on under the surface!

Icacos Island belongs to Fajardo and is easily one of the top beaches in Fajardo. You can reach Icacos Island by water taxi, or by booking a private catamaran tour from the main island.

Catamaran sailing cruises often include lunch, drinks, and snorkeling gear as part of the tours, so you can enjoy a full day eating, dancing, and snorkeling among the abundant coral reefs in the area.

Palomino

Snorkel around this island adjacent to Fajardo.

📍 Google Maps

Palomino is a private island next to Fajardo. This island is almost exclusively for the guests of El Conquistador Hotel in Fajardo. But, if you’re not staying in El Conquistador, you can visit the island on a private tour or through a water taxi.

Besides Palomino you can go island hopping and visit Cayo Icacos, Cayo Largo, and Cayo Diablo.

👉Local Tip:  Nature and beach lovers should consider staying in Fajardo since they’ll have more activities to do close to them. Check out my guide to learn about the other places to stay on the island.

Playa Los Lirios

Meditate on a rocky and remote beach on Fajardo’s coast.

📍 Google Maps

Playa Los Lirios is one of the lesser-known beaches in Fajardo. It has a rocky shore filled with dead corals and volcanic rock. On its shore, trained eyes can also find archeological traces that the Puerto Rican natives left behind.

The beach is not for swimming, but instead, you’ll love its solitude and photo-ready landscape.

Getting to Playa Los Lirios (listed as Playa El Crater in Google Maps) takes about an hour through the interior trail of Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve. If you book a tour with Para La Naturaleza, you can take the trolley ride there.

Playa Colora

📍 Google Maps | Entrance: $5 parking in Seven Seas

Just a 20-minute hike from Seven Seas Beach, you’ll find a beautiful hidden beach to take a romantic walk. Playa Colorá is a small beach with scenic views, turquoise waters, and distinctive reddish sand.

The beach is never crowded as you have to hike to get there, so it’s perfect to enjoy your own paradise for a few hours while enjoying the ocean breeze.

Playa Colorá is not a beach for swimming, though. It’s home to strong rip currents that are dangerous even to the most experienced swimmer. There aren’t any facilities or any lifeguards on this beach.

Best Outdoors

Fajardo MTB Trail

Adventure into this fun MTB trail hidden right within Fajardo’s urban area.

📍 Google Maps

While many visit Fajardo for its beautiful beaches and bio bay lagoon, Fajardo also hosts an MTB trail ideal for adventurers who want to spend a day away from the coast. The trail has almost 5 miles of challenging ups and downs.

You’ll cross over a small river multiple times, pass under a highway tunnel, and bike over a boardwalk in the mostly single-track route. Keep in mind that some locals use the route for hiking, too.

👉Local Tip: As of May 2025, the trail lacks maintenance and is difficult to navigate. Proceed at your own risk.

Arrecifes de la Cordillera Natural Reserve

Explore the coral reefs and marine life below Fajardo’s coastline.

Whether you’re an experienced diver or you just want to know what it feels like to be underwater at least once, you’ll get to live the experience in Arrecifes de la Cordillera Natural Reserve.

The protected marine area located approximately 1.5 nautical miles northeast of Fajardo includes islands, cays, islets, reefs, and seagrass beds where you’ll find a diverse marine life.

The area is home to over 80 fish species, including parrotfish and barracudas. Both soft and hard corals are present in the reserve, like Montastraea, Diploria, and Acropora. Sea turtles, jellyfish, manatees, nurse sharks, and even dolphins can be spotted in this area.

With crystal clear waters, beautiful coral reefs, and diverse marine life, diving and snorkeling in Fajardo make the perfect adult half-day tour.

La Zanja

Hike to a natural pool formed by the ocean water.

📍 Google Maps

La  Zanja is a natural pool created by the open sea waters in a ditch in the coastal rock formations in Fajardo. The 3.2-mile in-and-out trip from Seven Seas Beach takes about an hour and a half to complete.

You can hike through the Cabezas de San Juan reserve or the beach if the tide allows it. You will get your feet wet at some point with this last option.

Climbing the rock formations at the end is the most challenging part of the trail, but swimming in this natural beauty is worth the effort, which is why this is one of the top destinations for outdoor lovers in Puerto Rico.

El Yunque National Rainforest

Explore this lush national landmark that’s home to a diverse ecosystem.

El Yunque National Rainforest extends all through Luquillo, Rio Grande, and Fajardo. This national landmark is home to an impressive biodiverse ecosystem, multiple waterfalls, a rainforest zip line park, and thrilling hiking routes, making it one of my top preferred activities in Puerto Rico.

Coqui Water Park is one of the best waterparks in Puerto Rico. It is located inside El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo. It has pools and water slides for a family fun day. Although the park is exclusively for hotel guests, the park entrance is included in the nightly fee of your stay.

In addition to the park, El Conquistador Resort has a prime location from which you can see the beach, plus it offers boat tours to their private island, Palomino, where you can practice snorkeling with your kids. This altogether makes it one of the best all-inclusive resorts in Puerto Rico.

Las Croabas Park

Take a stroll in this park with lots of activities for the whole family.

Las Croabas Park is one of the best places to visit in Fajardo with your kids. It has playgrounds and food kiosks all right by a waterfront where you can see boats navigating the sea.

Once you’re visiting this recreation park, don’t miss the chance to take a picture with the giant mural of Puerto Rico’s flag, one of the many painted around the island by artist Hector Collazo!

Downtown Fajardo

Explore Fajardo’s downtown, filled with restaurants, malls, and historical landmarks.

Fajardo’s downtown has dozens of restaurants, shops, and landmarks. During the holidays, your kids will rave about the decorations and light ornaments in the Plaza Antonio Romero Barceló.

In the same plaza, history enthusiasts can check out Catedral de Santiago Apóstol, a cathedral with original walls and tiles from 1776, part of the National Register of Historical Sites.

Don’t miss out on the restaurants and coffee shops in the local market known as Plaza del Mercado. You can also buy local produce at Joe’s Plaza and Del Campo.

Las Tinajas Waterfall

Cool off on a hot day at this top Puerto Rico waterfall.

📍 Google Maps | Entrance: $2-$5 | 👉 Book a Tour to Las Tinajas

If you would rather spend your days swimming in the river rather than the beach, then set Las Tinajas Waterfall as your destination.

Las Tinajas is one of the top waterfalls in Puerto Rico. Spend a day relaxing or experiencing the thrill of jumping from a rope swing. Just make sure to ask the locals how to do it safely.

Keep in mind the place is quite popular, so you will often find group tours here. You might beat them by visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

👉 Local Tip: There is a free path to Las Tinajas Waterfall, but it’s challenging to navigate, which is why it’s safer and recommended to pay the fee to access through the private properties close to the waterfall.

  1. I was just in San Juan, Puerto Rico in November of 2021 & we did the hiking/waterfall tour at the Rain forest. It was wonderful and great exercise. Next time, definitely ditch the hotel in San Juan and stay in Fajardo.
