Tips for Planning a Honeymoon in Puerto Rico

Honeymoon Tip #1 – Choose the Right Season

If you’re spending a honeymoon in Puerto Rico, make sure to choose the best season to visit. Autumn and winter are the high seasons for travelers, but they aren’t the best time to enjoy the beaches due to the strong tides.

If you truly want to enjoy Puerto Rico as a beach vacation, spring and summer are better for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.

Alternatively, if you want to encounter fewer crowds, pick September and October for your trip.

Honeymoon Tip #2 – Check the Weather

While summer is a popular season to visit,  keep in mind that summer is part of the rainy season in Puerto Rico. Depending on where you are on the island, you may face daily showers, some more intense than others.

During this season, the southwest is often less rainy, and towns like Cabo Rojo and Guánica receive less rainfall. In contrast, you’ll experience the rainy weather more in the north and east coasts, and in the mountainous region.

Check the weather constantly and plan your outdoor activities early in the morning, depending on the forecast.

Honeymoon Tip #3 – Travel During the Low Season

Although it’s sunny all year round, Puerto Rico has a low season both for locals and international travelers which goes from September to November. Traveling during this season is the best if you’re doing Puerto Rico on a budget

However, these months are also the peak of the Puerto Rico hurricane season, so hazardous weather could affect your trip. I do recommend people travel during this season, but make sure to have travel insurance that can cover your costs in case a hurricane affects your trip.

Use Visitors Coverage to find an insurance that fits your travel needs.

Honeymoon Tip #4 – Stay in Old San Juan

If you don’t want to rent a car, you’ll be glad to know you don’t have to if you’re staying in Old San Juan. You can explore the historical district on foot and enjoy popular San Juan activities like touring El Morro or sunbathing at Playa Peña.

San Juan is also home to some of the best honeymoon resorts in Puerto Rico including Hotel El Convento, which was once a Carmelite convent constructed in 1646.

Honeymoon Tip #5 – Rent a Car

Renting a car in Puerto Rico is easy and necessary if you’re planning to explore the entire island. With a car, you can easily adjust your Puerto Rico itinerary and explore at your own pace.

If you don’t want to rent a car, check out my guide to getting around Puerto Rico to learn how you can move around the archipelago, including Vieques and Culebra.

👉 Pro Tip: If you’re renting a car, then we recommend using Discover Cars. It’s awesome to compare and contrast your options.

Honeymoon Tip #6 – Stay Outside San Juan

To truly experience Puerto Rico’s local culture, best beaches, and lush forests, you’ll want to stay outside of San Juan.

While the capital has plenty to offer, it’s often crowded with tourists and doesn’t fully capture the cultural richness of the archipelago. Some of Puerto Rico’s most authentic (and budget-friendly!) experiences lie beyond the metro area.

So, whether you’re after a more relaxed vibe or want to discover local favorite spots, I encourage you to go beyond San Juan and explore other cities or towns. Check out my guide to where to stay in Puerto Rico to find more recommendations.

Honeymoon Tip #7 – Try Local Food

Foodies shouldn’t miss out on Puerto Rico’s top plates

You can find great Puerto Rican food in the restaurants in San Juan, but nothing compares to the flavor and local experience of chinchorros, the small food kiosks and eateries you’ll find in Piñones, Luquillo, La Guancha, and Boquerón.

Best of all, eating at these food kiosks and eateries is not only delicious but also budget-friendly.

Honeymoon Tip #8 – Puerto Rico Lacks True All Inclusive Hotels

Many travelers are surprised to learn that Puerto Rico doesn’t have true all-inclusive resorts.

However, the archipelago has a great variety of resorts not only in San Juan but in other cities and towns.

Some of Puerto Rico’s top resorts include the St Regis Bahia Beach Resort, Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and El Conquistador Resort.

While you won’t be able to pay a single “all-inclusive” price at these hotels, you can just factor in the cost of extras in your budget or pre-purchase hotel packages before your honeymoon.
