Kayaking in a bioluminescent lagoon with your loved ones is a destination wedding highlight. Laguna Grande in Fajardo is one of the three Puerto Rico bioluminescent bays, and it’s a short ride from San Juan.

After a short ferry ride from San Juan, Puerto Rico, wedding guests can visit Casa Bacardí, the largest rum distillery in the world.

Their mixology classes combine history, drinks, and a fun hands-on experience, making it one of the best rum tours in Puerto Rico. But, even non-drinkers will enjoy the history tour.

One of my favorite destinations in Puerto Rico, Guánica State Fores is a perfect outdoor venue for wedding groups and nature-loving parties.

Even though it’s a dry forest, this unique spot actually boasts more biodiversity than El Yunque, and you can experience it firsthand through a network of hiking trails that run through its 10,000 acres.

You’ll also find beaches along the forest’s coastline, including Tamarindo Beach. But the forest’s most iconic landmark is Fuerte Caprón, a historic hilltop fort that offers picture-perfect views of Puerto Rico’s southern coast.

Icacos

Since Puerto Rico is an archipelago, you’ll find no shortage of offshore cays and islands worth exploring. One of the most popular is Icacos, a small cay off the coast of Fajardo that’s a favorite stop for catamaran and boat tours.

During your visit, you’ll be greeted by calm, turquoise waters and soft golden sand. It can get crowded, though. With the loud music from nearby boats, it often feels more like a floating beach party.

Luis Muñoz Rivera Park

Located right in Old San Juan, this outdoor park is perfect for pre-wedding photoshoots, intimate ceremonies, or even a small wedding reception. It’s also just a short walk from some of the best hotels in San Juan and from Escambrón Beach.

One of my favorite things about this spot is the salsa classes you can take with your wedding party. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon of pure fun, embracing Puerto Rican culture together.

Cooking Classes

Take a class and indulge in the local cuisine as part of your wedding.

Puerto Rico’s gastronomy is every foodie’s dream. From the capital city to the mountains, you’ll find endless flavors and dishes to fall in love with.

But what’s even better than tasting Puerto Rican food? Learning how to make it! During your visit, book a cooking class with your wedding party and bond over food, laughter, and culture.

You can also choose to combine a food tour and a cooking class. I personally loved the Flavors of San Juan Food Tour. I visited multiple restaurants in San Juan and learned how to make mofongo.

Los Morrillos Lighthouse

Located in the Boquerón State Forest, Los Morrillos Lighthouse offers outdoor-loving adventurers one of the best experiences in Puerto Rico. The area surrounding the lighthouse features stunning cliffside views of the island’s west coast.

Not only will you snap some of the most memorable photos of your trip, but if you take time to explore, you’ll find hidden caves, small coves, and natural stone bridges along the way.

This is one of my all-time favorite spots in Puerto Rico and one of my must-visit attractions in Cabo Rojo. If you’re into birdwatching, the coastal forest and nearby salt flats are home to a variety of bird species worth checking out.

Piñones

Beach hop and eat everything you can at Piñones.

Piñones offers the perfect mix of beaches, delicious food, and rich culture. This neighborhood in Loíza is the best destination if you’re looking to indulge in the best flavors of Puerto Rican cuisine

Along the scenic coastal drive, you’ll find dozens of food kiosks and restaurants serving everything from mofongo to piña coladas.
Best of all, you can pair that food adventure with beach hopping at some of Puerto Rico’s most loved beaches, like La Pocita and Vacía Talega. And if you’re craving a bit of thrill, book an ATV tour through the trails of Piñones for a fun, adrenaline-filled ride with your wedding party.

The Best Time to Have a Destination Wedding in Puerto Rico

A newly wedded couple kissing with an overlooking view in the background

The best time to have a destination wedding in Puerto Rico is during the dry season, which extends from December to April. During this period, it’s less likely that the rainy tropical weather will interrupt your wedding.

The summer is the best time to visit Puerto Rico for calm beaches without rip currents and big waves.

Wedding parties that would like to save a few bucks should consider planning a wedding during Puerto Rico’s hurricane season, when both hotels and venues offer better rates. Just avoid the month of September, which is the peak of the season, and it’s when it’s more likely that storms or hurricanes affect the island.

Tips for Planning a Destination Wedding in Puerto Rico

#1 – Bring Your Clothes Inside the Plane Cabin

Bring your wedding dress inside the cabin in a clothing bag, or within a carry-on, to prevent it from getting lost during the trip. If you’re worried about it getting wrinkled or stained, just make sure to include a visit to a Puerto Rico dry cleaner in your wedding planning details.

Tip #2 – Arrive a Few Days Before

View of the planes from the boarding gate in San Juan Airport
San Juan Airport

Arrive in Puerto Rico a few days in advance of your wedding to get your marriage license. The paperwork for getting married in Puerto Rico is simple, but sometimes minimal details can slow down the process.

Some of the documents you’ll need include a valid government-issued ID, medical clearance, birth certificates, and an affidavit stating that you’re in the country to get married.

A quick internet search will tell you which paperwork you need, but you can hire a third party to help you with it.

Tip #3 – Avoid Afternoon Weddings

View from a historical building in Puerto Rico during a sunny day
Mid-days are hot and produce hard shadows on photos

Regardless of the season, you’ll find humidity and heat to be constant factors in Puerto Rico’s weather. Ceremonies taking place in outdoor Puerto Rico wedding venues should happen in the early morning or late afternoon to escape the hottest part of the day.

Weddings between noon and 4 pm not only will have everyone sweating, but you’ll also have some pretty harsh shadows in your wedding photos.

Tip #4 – Go For The Outdoors

The author, Vanessa Ramos smiling for a photo in El Yunque
El Yunque is a memorable outdoor venue

Hotel venues aren’t a prerequisite for an unforgettable celebration in Puerto Rico. You’ll find plenty of outdoor and free (or almost free) outdoor venues.

Choosing to get married at any of Puerto Rico’s public beaches or El Yunque National Forest is an easy way to keep your budget in check. The natural beauty of Puerto Rico will be your best decor. Just make sure you have the right permits to marry at the location you choose.

Tip #5 – Coordinate Transportation

Clear blue sky over the San Juan Cathedral
The San Juan Cathedral is across from a hotel

Your wedding venue and hotel won’t necessarily be in the same location. When they are separated, coordinating transportation between the hotel and the wedding venue is essential to guarantee your ceremony runs smoothly.

Renting a car is the best way to get around Puerto Rico, but you can also hire private shuttles to move your guests to and from the hotel. Use Viator to find private shuttles available on the island.
