I used to live in the Dominican Republic and I’m lucky that I get to travel back home quite frequently to enjoy time with loved ones. Over the years, I have learned that packing smart is key to enjoying your trip. 

Swimwear for the beautiful beaches is a must, of course. But so are things like sunscreen and bug repellent. You’ll need these essentials and others no matter where you stay in the Dominican Republic. 

Here is my compiled list of essential items to pack for your trip.

Filtering Water Bottle

The Dominican Republic has a humid tropical climate year-round. It’s essential to stay hydrated and combat the warm days on your trip. 

Drinking tap water is not advised in the Dominican Republic. Opt out of purchasing bottled water during your stay and invest in the LARQ bottle instead. It is insulated, reusable, and cleans your water within one minute.

The Dominican Republic is known to have common power outages, especially outside of resort hotels. Make sure you stay connected and keep all of your devices charged while on your trip.

The Dominican Republic has a rich tropical climate all year round. Think of lightweight and breathable clothing when packing for your trip. Cotton and linen fabrics are ideal. They keep you feeling cool in the heat and humidity.

Pack swimwear for your beach days and casual outfits for exploring. Comfortable shoes are essential for outdoor adventures and a rain jacket is useful for wet days.

The dress code is generally laid-back in the Dominican Republic. However, locals do like to dress sharply for outings with loved ones, such as visiting a restaurant. Consider packing dressier options like a nice shirt or sundress.

There is no need to go to your hotel room for an outfit change when you have a beach cover-up. This essential item allows you to go from the pool to the beach, spa, or restaurant at your resort.

Excursion Items to Pack for the Dominican Republic

Do you have an itinerary full of adventurous excursions and activities? Be sure to pack these specialized items!

For snorkeling, bring your own gear. Packing your mask ensures comfort and hygiene. If you plan to explore waterfalls or hiking, pack a pair of hiking boots.

These items will enhance your experience, making outdoor adventures in the D.R. enjoyable and safe. Here are my recommendations for excursion items you might need in the Dominican Republic.

Money Belt

Dominican Republic Packing Tips

Pack Light

The Dominican Republic has a beautiful tropical climate all year. You do not need to pack thick and bulky clothing for your trip. Since you will most likely be spending the majority of your time at the beach, pack light! Just throw in a few swimsuits, light clothes, toiletries, and necessary items into your luggage.

Know What Items NOT to Take With You

This guide covers all of the items you should pack with you to the Dominican Republic. However, it is equally important to know what you should not bring with you. 

Flashing around your jewelry or fancy gadgets, such as an Apple watch, will only make you stand out as a tourist. You could become a target for hard sales pitches. And depending on the region you are in, you could be subject to pocketpicketing. 

It’s safe to leave these items at home. Take it from someone who lived in the Dominican Republic.

Know the Dress Codes

The dress code in the Dominican Republic is generally laid back. However, it is important to be familiar with the customs. 

Locals do not wear bathing suits openly at restaurants or shopping destinations. A light and comfortable cover up comes in handy and is easy to throw on. 

Dominicans take pride in dressing sharp for gatherings with loved ones. Stylish attire is a way to show respect and enjoy the occasion together. Bring a sharp outfit to wear, especially when dining at a restaurant.  

Museums tend to be fairly casual. However, these institutions are usually air-conditioned. So wear longer pants and bring another layer along. 

It is also understood that guests dress modestly when visiting historic and religious sites. Otherwise, you may not be allowed entry.

Do Laundry on Longer Trips

If you are staying in the Dominican Republic for an extended time, such as two weeks, then consider staying somewhere with access to a washing machine. A rental apartment with a washer or having access to a hotel’s laundry service will be invaluable.

Check the Weather

The Dominican Republic is sunny, hot, and humid year-round. However, the D.R. does experience a wet season from May to October. Keep in mind that your beach vacation may be interrupted by frequent showers during this season. Be sure to pack a light rain jacket with you.
