Boston is known for having weather that varies from season to season. As a local, I have a lot of experiences where family and friends come to visit and are not prepared. Luckily, I’ve spent years exploring the city and surrounding areas so I know just what you need to bring to Boston. 

This checklist will help you avoid making common mistakes and keep you prepared no matter what season you visit Boston.

Boston Red Sox Baseball Cap

Boston is known for its passionate sports fanatics. Bostonians are raised to represent Boston teams no matter where life takes them. That’s why my go-to hat is a classic Red Sox baseball cap.

This Boston Red Sox cap is the perfect accessory to wear while exploring the city. It provides some shade and comes in handy when you attend a Red Sox game at the iconic Fenway Park.

Backpack or Day Bag

As a parent to a little one, having a day bag is incredibly helpful for planning activities in the city. It’s important to choose something functional without sacrificing comfort.

Earbuds

Wireless earbuds are a great way to listen to music while you are traveling. I love visiting the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (one of the best attractions in Massachusetts!). I tend to pop my earbuds in when I want to listen to informative listening guides while I’m there.

Boston comes alive in the spring and summer. The days are longer and people spend more time outdoors in Boston parks and taking day trips. 

However, spring and summer weather in Boston is known to change from day to day, and throughout a single day. It is common to start the day with a jacket due to cool mornings but be in a T-shirt come noon. 

The hack to packing for Boston is to bring layers. Think of a denim jacket, a light rain jacket, or a breathable cable knit cardigan. 

So what clothing should you pack for a Boston vacation? Here is a quick clothing checklist for Boston:

Boston Packing Tips

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Comfortable shoes work best when traveling around Boston. It is a compact city filled with historic sites and even cobblestone streets. Comfortable shoes with flat soles will keep you safe and comfortable while you explore all the best attractions.  

Pack Layers

Be prepared for Boston’s changeable weather. When preparing for your trip, pack layers so that you have flexibility throughout your visit. Whether you travel in the summer or winter, packing layers is key to a successful trip in Boston.

Check the Weather in Advance

The weather forecast can change at the drop of a hat in Boston. I suggest you check the forecast before you arrive in Boston. Take a look at the daily forecast once you arrive as well. You might need to pack an umbrella for instance, before exploring the city for the day.

Consider Your Itinerary

Your list of planned Boston activities will influence what you pack. Do you have tickets to a Red Sox game in the spring? A Boston Red Sox cap, T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers are essential. 

Do Laundry

Consider doing laundry to keep your items fresh if you are staying in Boston for more than seven days. This is especially true during the summer when it’s very hot and humid outside.
