There are many towns and villages to choose from, though, and each will give you a classic New England summer experience.
Chatham

At the “elbow” of Cape Cod, Chatham offers a serene experience for first-timers with its beautiful beaches, lighthouses, and quaint downtown. It’s easily walkable and perfect for those looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway.
Chatham Bars Inn is my pick for best overall hotel on the Cape. It features a great photo-op to stop by when the flowers are blooming, and you can cross the street to check out the view of the ocean from this luxury hotel. It’s also walking distance from the Chatham Pier Fish Market to pick up fresh seafood. And of course, the rooms are comfortable and decorated in that classic New England style.
The Chatham Seafarer Inn is a cozy budget option in Chatham with an outdoor pool, tranquil gardens, and barbecue facilities for those summer nights. For a mid-range option, Chatham Tides is a good hotel with cute rooms, close to the beach.

Falmouth

👉 Best Area For First-Timers & Families | ✨ Best Falmouth Hotels: Falmouth Tides • Frederick William House • Red Horse Inn
Falmouth offers a lot for families and other visitors looking to explore the Cape for the first time. Falmouth’s downtown has many restaurants and boutiques to check out, and the area offers plenty of activities like mini golf, trails, and quick access to the Martha’s Vineyard ferries.
Falmouth hosts the Barnstable County Fair and a Food Truck Festival. Falmouth also hosts the annual Falmouth Road Race, which has been run by the sea for over 50 years.
Falmouth Tides is one of my top hotel picks for families since it’s right on the beach. Plus it has private balconies.
If you like Victorian-style rooms, the Frederick William House offers bikes to explore the Cape during the day, and a fireplace to spend time with the family at night.
For a quiet stay with privacy and excellent guest service, stay at the Red Horse Inn.

Provincetown

👉 Best Area For Entertainment | ✨ Best Provincetown Hotels: Anchor Inn Beach House • Crowne Pointe Historic Inn • Breakwater Hotel
Provincetown or “P-town” is the liveliest part of the Cape if you’re looking for a taste of New England summer nightlife. It’s a hub of art galleries, museums, and theaters; and festivals are hosted here throughout the year. If you want to experience the parades, parties, and entertainment, visit during the Provincetown Carnival or Jazz Festival.
Anchor Inn Beach House is the best hotel to stay at to experience all this entertainment. It’s close to downtown and nightlife, and it has beachfront access, a lush garden, and a terrace. For a more budget-friendly option right on the beach, you can check out the Breakwater Hotel.
If you’re looking for a more relaxing experience, The Crowne Pointe Historic Inn is a boutique stay with an attached spa that’s perfect for wrapping up a long day of exploring.
Pros of Staying in Provincetown:
- The most unique town on the Cape
- Lots of restaurants and bars, more nightlife compared to other parts of the Cape
- You can take the ferry from Boston to Provincetown
Cons of Staying in Provincetown:
- It takes a while to get here if driving since it’s at the tip of the Cape

Hyannis

👉 Best Area for Central Location & Ferry Access | ✨ Best Hyannis Hotels: Margaritaville Resort • Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Cape Cod Hyannis • Hyannis Travel Inn • SeaCoast Inn
Hyannis is ideal for anyone looking to experience all of the Cape as well as day trips to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket because it has ferry service to both islands. The Main Street of Hyannis has specialty shops, restaurants, and more to explore. Hyannis Harbor is also a popular place for boat-watching.
For a mix of family travel and fun, Margaritaville Resort has a lot to offer with its indoor water park, year-round outdoor pool, and 24-person hot tub if you’re looking for a lot of ways to stay in the water.
If you want the best location to be within walking distance (~10-15 minutes) of the ferries for day trips to the islands, Hyannis Travel Inn is a good option that serves continental breakfast. SeaCoast Inn is another hotel that’s a short walk from the ferries. And some of the rooms have a kitchenette.
For a more familiar stay, Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Cape Cod is still a short drive to the ferries and serves breakfast.
Pros of Staying in Hyannis:
- Easy to take the ferries to both Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket
- Main Street area has a lot of restaurants and shops
Cons of Staying in Hyannis:
- Because of how popular it is for families and access to ferries, it may get congested during the summertime

Mashpee & Sandwich

👉 Best Area For Restaurants | ✨ Best Mashpee/Sandwich Hotels: The Club at New Seabury • Sea Mist Resort • Dan’l Webster Inn and Spa
Mashpee and Sandwich should be the first places you look on Cape Cod for delicious food and drinks with a view. For views of the beach looking out over the ocean, check out drinks and pizza at Treehouse Brewery or dine at Fisherman’s View.
Sandwich also has many museums and you must stop by Heritage Museums and Gardens if you’re in the area.
The Club at New Seabury is my top hotel pick in the area with its private beach, sauna, and restaurant. If you’re looking for a historic inn with spa services and an attached American restaurant, look no further than the Dan’l Webster Inn and Spa.
For a quieter stay with the family, check out Sea Mist Resort, which offers mini golf and tennis courts for its guests.
Pros of Staying in Mashpee & Sandwich:
- Best choice of restaurants on the Cape
- Beautiful gardens and museums to check out
Cons of Staying in Mashpee & Sandwich:
- Requires more driving to be able to explore other parts of the Cape
- Other towns further on the Cape may offer more scenic sites

Tips for Staying in Cape Cod
Pack layers

In the summer, Cape Cod is warm during the day but gets cooler at night. So, make sure you pack a sweater or light jacket, especially for those late sunset nights!
You’ll need a car, but plan for traffic
Having a vehicle to use is essential for being able to explore and view everything the Cape has to offer. There are only two bridges on and off the Cape, so plan for traffic in the mornings and afternoons.
You can take a ferry from Boston to Provincetown

If you’re flying into Boston, you can take a ferry straight from Boston to P-town (aka Provincetown). More info can be found at baystatecruisecompany.com.
Reserve a vehicle spot on the ferries ASAP
If you’re planning to take a car on the ferry to the islands, make sure you reserve a spot on the ferry ASAP. They usually open bookings for the summer in January or February. See steamshipauthority.com for more details.
Visit during the off-season for fewer crowds

Most businesses on Martha’s Vineyard & Nantucket close after Labor Day (September) and don’t reopen until April or May. If you want to explore the Cape & Islands without the crowds, the off-season is the best time to go! Just be aware that some businesses and attractions will be closed for the season.

Hi Sami,
We were thinking of visiting Cape Cod for Thanksgiving as our daughter lives in Boston and could join us. Hopefully she could take a train some of the way and we could pick her up. Where would you recommend for a 4 night stay? We like the outdoors (weather permitting), Main Street shops and dining.
Thank you,
Ellen
Hi Ellen,
I’d recommend Provincetown, Chatham, or Hyannis which have more year-round options with Main Street shops and dining! If you’re looking for something more Cape-Cod-picturesque with outdoor places nearby to explore, Chatham or P-town would be better areas for you to stay in. If you choose P-town, your daughter could potentially take the ferry from Boston if her schedule aligns with their late fall weekend schedule.
If you’re interested in a Thanksgiving meal, a few options are Wild Goose in Chatham, Chillingsworth in Brewster, the Belfry or Dan’l Webster Inn in Sandwich (definitely call to confirm any of them—the Thanksgiving Grand Buffet at the Chatham Bars Inn is sold out but has a waitlist).
Hope you have a cozy Thanksgiving!
Hi Sami,
I have read so many novels about Cape Cod, Nantucket
and Martha’s Vineyard that I have to visit and stay at all 3! Do you have suggestions for how I can accomplish and what makes sense. Could I do in a week’s time? Is early May a good time to try this and is that before large crowds? Thank you for your assistance. Blame all those fabulous novelists for the interest generated!
Hi Mary,
Did you happen to read The Summer of Broken Rules? I’m reading it right now!
It is possible to do it all in a week if you’re ok with day trips to the islands and spending the other days relaxing or driving to explore mainland parts of the Cape. To visit both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, I’d recommend staying in or near Hyannis for access to both of the ferry services! Early May would be great to avoid crowds and some of the seasonal businesses will be opening back up to get ready for the busy Memorial Day weekend.
Hi. We are planning a trip to Boston and Cape area from Sept 10-17. Was thinking to stay downtown Boston for 3 days and then Cape area for 3 then heading back to Boston to fly out. I’m seeing in your post that businesses close after Labor Day. Will there still be things open to see and go eat in mid Sept in Hyannis, Chatham, Nantucket?
Hi Sara! Yes, on the mainland part of the Cape like Hyannis and Chatham there will be businesses and restaurants open still, check out their downtowns! For activities I’d check the websites for if/when they close in the fall or if some facilities close after Labor Day.
It’s the islands like Nantucket & Martha’s Vineyard that will have more limited options. In general, there are some places open year-round closer to the ferry ports. I recommend checking individual restaurants and businesses’ social media (Instagram/Facebook) for posts on if they’ve closed for the season before you head over.
Hope you enjoy your visit!
Hi! My husband is in a foldable electric wheelchair. The two of us and one 21 y/o daughter are thinking to come to cape cod or somewhere close and maybe do day trips to MV and or Nantucket. We would rely on public transportation or uber type rides. Any thoughts on best economical places to stay for the three of us? Planning to come around August 6 to August 11 or 12. TIA!
Hi Kristy! It’s a little tougher to find availability on the Cape without booking further out but for Aug 6-11 or 6-12, it looks like The Mariner Resort Cape Cod in West Yarmouth is closer to Hyannis for the ferries to the islands has an accessible King room available! (Also Sunbird Cape Cod Resort or The Uncommoner Hotel)
The bus system in Martha’s Vineyard is consistent and here’s their 2025 route map thru Sept 27th. Just wanted to give a heads up that sometimes uber type rides on the island may have long wait times depending on location & availability.
I hope your family has a good time on the Cape & islands!
Hi Samantha,
I loved your article on Where to Stay in Cape Cod (5 Best Places). This is SO helpful! Chatham, where you recommended, has no availability when we will be there so I’m looking at The Mansions at Ocean Ridge in Eastham. Can you tell me about Eastham and how it compares to the other areas? Is this a good area for teens and young adults? (We are interested in an oyster shucking experience/watching it. Where do you recommend we do this?)
Hi Ann,
Thank you! You can’t go wrong with being somewhere along the Cape Cod National Seashore–Eastham has Nauset Light Beach and Coast Guard Beach. Eastham doesn’t have a traditional Cape downtown experience if that’s what you’re looking for, but it is between Chatham and P-town which both have downtowns if you, teens, and young adults want to explore different parts of the Cape. If you’re referring to The Mansion at Ocean Edge in Brewster, you’d be near the Brewster Flats and other outdoor areas to explore.
If I were interested in an oyster shucking experience, I would consider these options:
The Ocean Edge Resort’s Oyster Bed Tour + add on the Crate to Plate Experience to watch the culinary team demo oyster shucking
For a more immersive experience, you might be interested in Shellfish Farm Tours that run until October 11th–I’d ask them if they specifically have oyster shucking demos.
There’s also options for booking an Oyster party or private event to learn oyster shucking firsthand
Hope you enjoy your visit!
I am staying at the red jacket inn, I would like to take a sight seeing boat tour, can you recommend something that is close to the hotel. Thanks
Hi Maureen,
If you’re staying at the Red Jacket Beach Resort in Yarmouth, I’d say your best closer option for a sight-seeing boat tour would be in Hyannis.
There’s a Lighthouse Harbor Tour. If you’re interested in a relaxed non-tour sunset ride, there’s also a Hyannis Harbor Sunset Cruise or Live Music Cruise.
Hope you enjoy the ride!
Sami,
Where’s the best place to stay to primarily hike and visit beaches in Cape Cod National Seashore Park? Where is the entrance or entrances to the Park? Thank you Sami for help in answering those questions.
Hi Tim,
If the Great Island and Atlantic White Cedar Swamp trails are on your bucket list and you want to catch some sunrises at Marconi, Coast Guard, or Nauset beaches, I’d recommend staying in Wellfleet or Eastham.
If sunsets are your thing, I’d recommend staying in Provincetown or Truro for Race Point or Herring Cove beaches and head down to Great Island trail loop when you want to hike.
You can find more Cape Cad National Seashore beach info here and more trail info like entrances here.
Hope you have a great time on the Cape!
Thank you very much!
