50 Best Places to Travel in 2024

Fight travel FOMO with our picks for the best places to travel in 2024. Curated by Travel Lemming’s team of expert travelers, this is our annual list of hidden gems and emerging destinations we think you should visit. This year, our list is filled with places perfect for longer trips and embracing a slower – and more sustainable – pace of travel.

Travel Lemming’s list of best places to travel in 2024 is all about embracing the benefits of slow travel.

At Travel Lemming, our team of dozens of travel experts create practical guides to some of the best destinations around the USA and the world.

Each year, we pool our collective knowledge to curate a mega-list of the 50 favorite places we think deserve a spot on your bucket list in the coming year (learn more about our methodology below).

And, each year, a different theme emerges from our list.

In last year’s list, Travel Lemming declared 2023 the year of “revenge travel,” as the world was finally fully reopened from pandemic-era restrictions. And, indeed, travel returned in a BIG way this past year, with many travelers splurging on the big trips they’d been dreaming of throughout those difficult years.

But with that pent-up wanderlust finally released, we think 2024 is the appropriate time to slow it down a notch.

While the return of the global travel industry has been welcome news to many tourism-dependent economies, if travelers continue globetrotting at a breakneck pace, we risk returning to the days of overtourism.

Fast travel also risks burning out not just ourselves, but also the planet.

The solution?

Consider spending more time at fewer destinations. Accepting that you can’t “see it all” could ultimately liberate you to better enjoy the places you can see. Slower travel is ultimately more sustainable, both for you – but also for Planet Earth.

Thankfully, slow travel is easier than ever thanks to the rise of remote work, which has enabled many to take longer trips than we could have in the “before days.”

Need inspiration for where to go? Well, read on, because Travel Lemming’s team of travel experts has curated the perfect list of places to slow it all down this year.

Discover Mexico’s hidden gems on the soon-to-be-opened Maya Train. Get off the grid in Gizo or Koh Yao Noi, tropical paradises that require longer trips. Or stick closer to home and savor the sounds and flavors of Memphis or the scenery of St. John’s.

From Norway to Northern Sumatra, from Peru to Portugal, and from Guatemala to Georgia, this list offers a destination for every traveler.

Just remember … you can’t see it all, no matter how fast you travel!

50 Best Places to Travel in 2024

1. Yucatán, Mexico

The colorful walls of Valladolid, Yucatán

Escape Cancun on the Maya Train to colorfully authentic Mexican towns. Discover beaches free of tourists and seaweed, ancient pyramids, and underground swimming holes the Mayans believed were gateways to the underworld.

Mexico’s Yucatán state is a jewel, and 2024 will be the year it shines for the world. Located on the peninsula of the same name, Yucatán state has long been overshadowed by its more tourist-oriented neighbor, Quintana Roo. But that is all poised to change with the newly opened Maya Train.

The Maya Train will connect Cancun International Airport to Izamal. It’s nicknamed the “Yellow City” because of the canary hue of its Spanish colonial buildings. Along the way, travelers can hop off in Valladolid, another historic town. Valladolid serves as the gateway to the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Eventually, the train is slated to continue to Mérida, the vibrant capital city of the Yucatán where history and modernity collide. Mérida is one of the safest cities in Mexico and is also home to a booming restaurant scene.

Surrounding Mérida are thousands of cenotes. These lush, underground swimming holes look like something out of an Indiana Jones movie. The Mayans believed cenotes were gateways to the underworld. Others believe cenotes are the result of unique geological conditions created by the same meteorite that killed the dinosaurs.

For more traditional water sports, Yucatán’s massive white sand beaches, like Progresso and El Cuyo, are never crowded. Their location on the Gulf of Mexico also shelters them from the massive influx of seaweed that annually piles up on the shores of Caribbean beach resorts.

The northern powerhouse has an eclectic food scene, complemented by some of the best pubs and bars in the entire UK. Chuck in a few museums and galleries, too — Manchester has some of the UK’s best. Also, no visit would be complete without making a pilgrimage to at least one of the city’s two footballing cathedrals. They’re the homes of Manchester United and Manchester City.

As music mogul Tony Wilson once said, “Manchester kids have the best record collections.” Mancunians certainly move to a different beat than locals to London, creating a city where even tourists feel at home.

16. Ko Yao Noi, Thailand

Ko Yao Noi is a hidden gem in the middle of Thailand’s most famous bay

Nestled in the middle of Thailand’s famous Phang Nga Bay is a secret island retreat where the locals still outnumber the tourists. Ko Yao Noi offers an authentic cultural experience and the opportunity to truly disconnect.

Ko Yao Noi is located smack dab in the middle of Thailand’s famous Phang Nga Bay, one of the most touristed bodies of water in the world. Yet, somehow this tranquil island is barely touched by tourism at all. You’ll find a handful of eco-hotels and small beach boutiques. But most of the island consists of local communities and vast stretches of untamed jungle.

Wake at sunrise and rent out your own longtail, Thailand’s unique style of wooden boat. Ko Yao Noi’s prime location is ideal for island-hopping to the many nearby uninhabited islands. Early risers stay one step ahead of the larger tour boats coming from nearby Phuket.

There isn’t much on the island other than beaches, jungle, and a few small communities, but that’s really the entire appeal. Ko Yao Noi is the perfect eco-escape to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature (or perhaps, with yourself).

Nearby hiking trails offer waterfront views and lead high into the mountains. Further trailheads provide access to stunning waterfalls, which are iconic to southwest Oregon.

Visit Sant’Agnello, a serene neighbor to the bustling beach town of Sorrento and an affordable alternative to the Amalfi Coast. This destination is equally suited for lazy days and thrilling excursions to spots like the Path of the Gods and the island of Capri.

Hoboken is a small, but bustling city with a big heart — home to great dining, buzzing nightlife, and fantastic waterfront views. Visit several parks and piers to admire the stunning Manhattan skyline from across the Hudson River.

Hoboken, New Jersey lies across the Hudson River, visible from Manhattan but often under tourists’ radar. However, this small city has so much to offer.

Traditional Japanese architecture in Takayama

Soothe your soul in a rural mountain village in the Japanese Alps. Takayama’s historic streets preserve the Edo Period and its breathtaking shrines, torii gates, and temples.

Travel Lemming’s annual list of places to travel is our biggest annual project. It is a collaborative effort of our entire team of more than 35 travel experts.

We determine the list in three phases: a nomination phase, a selection phase, and a fact checking phase.

Nomination phase: In September, each of our dozens of expert travel writers submit nominations for their favorite hidden gems around the world.

Selection phase: In October, our editorial board votes on which nominees should make the cut, and also rates them so we can order the list.

Travel Lemming’s editorial board this year consisted of:

Nate Hake (Editor in Chief)

Taylor Herperger (Marketing Director & Senior Editor)

Abigail Bliss (Editor)

Elizabeth Demolat (Editor)

Lea Rose Allbaugh (Editor)

Chelsea Booker (Editor)

Rachel Davey and Marty Sebova of Very Hungry Nomads (guest board members who recently completed their quest to visit every country in the world)

Fact Checking phase: Next, our editors go through the entries with a fine toothed comb to ensure factual accuracy. We double and triple check details through an extensive process that includes outreach to local tourism boards to make sure our recommendations are factually correct, up to date, and aligned with local community goals.

The end result is what we think is our best list yet – and we hope you do too! Of course, all “best of” lists are inherently subjective, and ours is no different. There are many amazing places to travel that we didn’t have space for this year – but there’s always next year’s list of places to travel!
